So, how exactly do these work? It seems the combining them just gives a slightly greater strength bonus (around 25-35%), but no change to the health of the unit?

Hmm, I think I need to revisit the battle rules a bit. It didn't feel like I was getting as much value from my corps as simply having two units, but perhaps that's because they were already at a strength advantage.

Corps are based on the strongest unit, the second unit promotions are wasted. If you want to make Corps from existing unit, the best is to build a rookie to join.
