Last chance to tell us about your Aztec Adventure!

I was a wimp and decided to drop out of the 20K race. All these masterful civvers gathered around a single victory condition was more intimidating than I could handle. It took me a while before I realized I had another option though:

10 AD - Great Lighthouse
670 AD - Copernicus
820 AD - Sistine Chapel prebuild converted to Knight's Templar, followed by a barracks (kind of silly not to have veteran crusaders). Montezuma decides that the next rival to make a demand will be told where to shove it.
1150 AD - Isabella demands Metallurgy. Instead, the Aztecs stick her with an AI dogpile (France, England, Germany, America, Mongols).
1210 AD - Maya decides to violate a RoP with Russia. It's one of the rare cases where the AI actually does this intelligently, since they steal Sun Tzu's from the Russians for a few turns.
1220 AD - Jaguar warrior wins against Spanish longbowman, starting a GA. Not a bad time, as Shakespeare's Theater was still being built.
1260 AD - Shakespeare's
1285 AD - Spain gets a taste of la conquista.
1320 AD - Newton's

Normally it would be smooth sailing to an easy 20K victory from here, but now it gets really hairy:

1385 AD - Nationalism -> Mobilization! Horses imported from Mongolia, but with no iron or saltpeter, Montezuma can build 1 horseman/turn
1420 AD - France decides it's time for a little Mesoamerican adventure, declares war on Maya in spite of MPPs that Smoke Jaguar has in place.
1570 AD - La morte d'Jeanne d'Arc, completely at the hands of the AI's without any Aztec involvement.
1595 AD - Lincoln seeks Manifest Destiny by attacking the Mayans and enlisting Henry to help, triggering a world war. Pachahuti defends his Native American brethren, while Elizabeth takes up a fine opportunity to punish those pesky Yanks.
1615 AD - Montezuma joins the Native American coalition by declaring war on the USA. Saltpeter purchased from Germany, followed by massive upgrades to cavalry.
1730 AD - Theory of Evolution (standard Atomic Theory -> Electronics route)
1745 AD - El Gringo del Norte: no más

By this time, it was becoming apparent that the crusaders weren't much good after all, as they kept getting killed by rifles. So they were mostly disbanded and their shields were confiscated as raw materials to build a factory and hydro plant.

1764 AD - Universal Suffrage
1766 AD - Germany goes after Inca, dragging in the Mayans and English with MPPs.
1774 AD - With Pachahuti distracted in the east, Montezuma decides it's time to push back the purple borders to the south and signs an alliance with Maya against Inca.
1832 AD - Sign peace after the Inca are down to three towns, one of which is in Mongol territory. Immediately, they are brought into a new war with the Maya (much to the surprise of Smoke Jaguar, who previously thought the Aztecs were his best friends in the world).
1850 AD - Hoover Dam (to deny it to the AI rather than get any bonus)
1886 AD - After years of rampaging through Mayan lands, the Aztec people decided they had enough of war. The Mayans are down to 3 cities in their core, and their capital has jumped over to what was formerly France (where they have another 5 cities).

It's doubtful that the crusaders were even worth the shields, since the Aztec treasury is nearing 20K gold (culture still stands at about 15K).

1890 AD - Bismarck demands to see the Aztec territory map and throws a huge fit after being refused. He's so angry that he neglects to seek help from the other AI's, so naturally those are brought into alliance against him.
1922 AD - Somehow, Chartres gets autorazed even though it has Magellan's... probably because the French were long gone, and the Germans never built any culture there.
1938 AD - Deutschland goes kaput

Clearly, a diplomatic win is out of the question by this time, so Montezuma decides that reputation is worthless. Still...

1950 AD - Unlike Smoke-Jaguar, who abused a RoP agreement to capture Sun Tzu's, Montezuma positioned his forces carefully in Russian territory before sending a spy into Moscow with instructions not to be too successful. Unsurprisingly, he is caught. Immediately, the attack on Russia begins with the destruction of Yaroslavl' along with Sun Tzu's.
1963 AD - Rostov destroyed, taking with it the last of the truly annoying Russian air force. Russian captial jumps to... Houston.
1971 AD - An espionage fail in Lisbon is casus belli for Portugal.
1979 AD - Henry navigates the river Styx.
1987 AD - A surprisingly generous peace treaty is offered to Russia, which would supply designs for aircraft in exchange for automobiles. Soon afterwards, the Czarina is spotted wearing a strange glowing green crystal around her neck. It is later discovered that the necklace is radioactive, poisoning Catherine to death, but at her funeral, Montezuma manages to purchase it for further study, handing over a tidy sum of 28,000 gold. Before the dust is settled though, the Russian royal family is summarily rounded up and executed, and their burial crypt gets ransacked to recover the money.

Bah... fission is pretty useless as a free tech if a diplomatic win isn't expected....

1988 AD - An Aztec battleship "accidentally" lobs a shell into Rotterdam, causing the Mayans to declare war because of their MPP with the Netherlands.
1990 AD - Smoke-Jaguar offered as a human sacrifice to Quetzalcoatl.
1992 AD - Montezuma is overcome with lust and initiates a RoP-rape of Elizabeth. Ugly Khan thinks he's a better fit and declares war.
1993 AD - Lizzie's pain clearly did not last long. Temujin seeks refuge in his offshore hideout in Hovd.
1997 AD - The Inca, who haven't made any recovery since the end of the previous war with them, are crushed under an avalanche of artillery shells and tank fire. They are the last foreign occupants of the main continent.

OK... maybe fission is good for something after all...

2009 AD - Manhattan Project
2017 AD - William of Orange, who for centuries has led the Dutch in defiance of the seas, suddenly finds himself under a lot of water.
2020 AD - Two tactical nukes launched at the cities on the Mongol island.
2021 AD - No traces of Temujin found in the ruins of Hovd. Must have been obliterated by the blast.
2022 AD - Montezuma stands as the sole remaining ruler over the world, now incorporated into the nation of Aztlán.

This game was quite a chore in the mid-industrial age, as Germany and Russia had a lot of culture and it was really slow to knock down all their cities. However, being on Pangaea certainly helped, since the AI's wasted most of their units against each other (instead of me!). C3C tourist attractions also kept a healthy amount of income coming in.

I have to say, mobilization is a really nice defense against getting an accidental 20K victory (if only it were enabled in GOTMs...). I ended this game with 19,892 culture, 96cpt. CivAssist predicted a 1938 AD cultural 20K after Newton's; without mobilization it would have come in a few turns earlier than that due to the IA wonders. Certainly not a competitive finish by any standard.

I had 5 MGL's this game, the first one in 1898 AD. That one turned into the Intelligence Agency, the others were utterly useless (I think I wasted one on Apollo Program at the end of the game, just for kicks).

Entry class: Predator
Game status: Conquest Victory for Aztecs
Game date: 2022 AD
Firaxis score: 276
Jason score: 344

After entering the Industrial Age in 1000AD, researching Steam Power and realizing I had no access to Coal, I went and got it (researching Mil Trad along the way to aid me in this process!).

Culture-wise, my builds went:
1170AD Smith's Trading Company
1180AD Military Academy
1265AD Universal Suffrage
1295AD Theory of Evolution
1335AD Hoover Dam
1355AD Wall Street
1375AD Intelligence Agency
1395AD Pentagon
1400AD Battlefield Medicine

Then a long, long, gap with nothing to build but Armies (disbanded for 100 shields/time elsewhere) until....
1565AD The Internet+Research Lab
1610AD United Nations
1640AD Apollo Program

I crossed the line for a 20K win in 1665AD.

I'd also reduced the original 11 opponents to 5 (Portugal, Russia, Mongols in the north; France in the SE; and the Netherlands on their tiny archipelago out East). I was at war with Russia (as were Portugal and Mongolia), fighting purely defensively. Thanks to a Russia/France MPP and a couple of alliances, France was at war with both the Mongols and the Portuguese, with Mongolia losing badly. The Dutch had been dragged in on one side or the other as well, but I forget which.

[Edit] I've attached a tab-delimited .txt with all of my culture builds, plus some other basic stats.

100K achieved on 1345AD (Open).

Jason: 11362,
Firaxis: 6589.

Ineventful game, which was made a bit more interesting by French, who got a surplus of SoZ horse warriors. They sneak-attacked me in the end, and razed my 1c1 towns near the border. I didn't want to destroy them as not go over Dom limit, so spent a lot of time killing their SoZ horsies and rebuilding towns.

I stayed in Monarchy the entire game, and after I settled all I could (sometimes rearranging captured towns to 1c1), I cash-rushed about 3-6 libraries each turn, building them in all my towns by the end and rushing only Cathedrals in the last 20 turns or so.
Not sure if pop-rush would've worked better, as libs are expensive and a lot of my 1c1 towns were starving or small. And I was too lazy to organize mass quick improvement of all the tiles everywhere.

Here's the snapshot of us in the end:

(*That's what happens when you leave the computer on overnight).

A close one with eldar! I think maybe I left a little on the table in the middle ages--I learned something from this. My research pace DID end up being a little too slow to get to Shakespeare's; I really don't think the relative lack of shields cost all that much, but it would have been nice to swap that around with, say, Bach's. I couldn't get there in time though.

Culture builds in the industrial era (and beyond):

1110 AD: Copernicus' Observatory
1210 AD: Smith's Trading Company
1280 AD: Universal Suffrage
1315 AD: Theory of Evolution
1330 AD: Wall Street
1370 AD: Hoover Dam

Your moderately amusing screen shot/LOL-AI moment for the day follows... three turns after gifting Germany from Industrialization to the modern ages, and buying Computers (yay) from him for *inhale* 3000 gold, 700 gpt, rubber, spices, silks, dyes, furs, contact with the Dutch, my world map, Espionage, Free Artistry, and Economics *exhale*, they sneak-attacked me at a crappy city in the middle of nowhere. Thanks for my 700 gpt back.

The screen shot below shows the OTHER reason why that probably wasn't such a hot idea  :

Bismarck left this world in 1495 AD.

Today's other lesson (learned by observation, after allying in everyone against Bismarck just for fun): Conquistadors against mech infantry is a losing battle.

Of some interest is that, were COTM games eligible for the HOF, eldar and I would both have top-5 finishes on the chart. Which goes to show that, well, a lot of people haven't played that may type for the HOF. ;)

i really like how you adapted your typical strategy for this one, sima qian!

will summarize my own game tonight.

Nice game DWetzel, but I believe you read the wrong chart. This was a "standard Regent" type map, right? The 8th place game, by AutomatedTeller, on a standard Regent map has a finish date of 1605 AD. Did you mean the Large or Huge Regent chart? There do exist a lot of unplayed HoF spots. That's part of how it took me a fairly short amount of time to get to elite quartermaster status.

I had it in my head that this was a large map; wrong?

My 20k date was going to be 2058AD but my game ended before then :faint: Bummer. Guess I should have built culture earlier.

This is a standard map with 11 opponents and 60% water. It only felt "large" because of those settings.

So those 4 turns would, I feel, almost certainly have been clawed back by my building the MoM. However there are other 20K attempts out there so we'll wait and see what happens.

The HG was built in 490BC in Chichen Itza, so went in the Pyramids cascade that was my own doing (I only know the date because I captured it and CAII incorrectly tells me how much culture it's worth!). What this tells me is that I ought to have been able to trade for Monarchy* & build it myself after the MoM (or instead of the MoM). MoM was in Paris and I didn't touch a French hair all game.

* I bet I know why I didn't. The only viable trades would've been Republic & Lit. I wanted to hold on to my Republic monopoly to snag MA techs from the Russians and Germans. I also had the GLib by then and was reasonably hoping that 2 civs would have Monarchy thus saving me the trouble. Stupid Regent AIs, can't research for toffee!!

Unlike others, I never thought to go for a culture victory. I didn't have a real plan for anything, just began playing - happy to see a GOTM not on some godforsaken insane difficulty level. Playing with an open-ended strategy, I usually took the line of least resistance, which turned out to be my neighbors. ;) Finished with a domination victory around 1600 AD. Fun game, thanks CFC.

The holidays were great for me and GOTMs, I was able to complete the Civ4: Warlords game (WOTM - Santa Claus), and now this one. Since I'm in the groove, I'm going to begin the Civ4 GOTM this evening. Warlord level! Yay! :D

Eldar, I think losing the HG was more of a loss than losing the MoM. They're both nice, of course. Against that, I lost a lot of time on the Great Library, which hurt; I'm not sure if it's better to lock up all the culture targets, or accept losing one or two in exchange of a really early Great Library.

My biggest problem in the game, really, was cash flow issues in the late ancient/early medieval ages. I would have saved a few turns on everything if I'd been able to buy off the cathedral/university faster. Not sure what the right way to do that is, though; there wasn't a lot of cash available to bring in from the AI, and I did have to push research a bit. Maybe gifting Republic and/or Currency to the AI sooner to get some cash in their hands?

for once i finished quite early, so my whole report comes in one:

playing open class
going for conquest
victory in turn 160 (450AD)
Firaxis score 5804
Jason score 10904

i read the game intro and dreamt of a bc victory as well as a AA victory. well... i failed miserably with the first goal and achieved the second technically, as no MA tech was researched in this game. for my first time, i conquered the world with only swords, and mainly horses.

that´s how it went:
found Tenochtitlan on tile north. build order sth like jag-jag-w-worker-granary-settler-rax for an 8-turner @ 10 spt. 2nd city SE by the wheat there, 3rd city NW by the 2nd wheat around.
i accidentally have my GA triggered in 1790bc by the Yanks :( and therefore destroy them in 1625bc - with jags only :D i research rep in 1425bc, but do not revolt immediately. but i shut off research here! there is a little English war running, then i turn towards the SE for the early beginning of the conquest. say bye bye Inca in 270bc, the same year where i got my 1st MGL to build a swords army in order to reduce losses against hill cities. against all odds i should only get a 2nd MGL late in the game. the dutch start to settle their 2nd island.
until now, on short distance, i warred with swords. only in 150bc i connect horses and build those, and only those, from then on. plus i assign worker brigades to build roads through the continent for faster conquest.
England leaves the world in style in 50ad
in 70ad the Germans say "Tschüs"
130ad marks an early unprospected end in the Mayan calendar
and 230ad must be such a magical date that the French as well as the Ports chose it for their final defeat
none of them made up for a good fight.
in 340ad the first 2 (only, out of 6) ships chained 4 swords over to the Dutch. in this same year i got all 8 luxes connected, too.
350 saw the end of russia and spain. 370 only the 2nd MGL.
410 ad the mongols died who at least had made some progress against russia early before (when they still had been my allies)
and in 440ad conquest was complete.
some civs, including the Aztecs, made it into the MA, but no one researched a MA tech.

2 remarkable things in this game: for the first time i warred big style mainly relying on horses. and i never built the FP for the first time since... i cannot even remember. just felt that i did not need it and it would not pay off in this game if i had to hand build it.

Open, going for a BC Domination victory

I reached the MA in 925BC gifting both Germany and Russia into the same era, they got Engineering and Monotheism. Russia didn’t want to trade Monotheism.

I started on Feudalism which I got in 650BC after which I proceded to Chivalry. I discovered Chivalry in 490BC and stopped research.

The wars were not very eventfull, it’s just all about setting up a good infrastructure and making deals for peace for cities leaving the civs with 1 or 2 cities. And ofcourse going multi-frontal. So below just a short recap of the wars:

- My first war started in 750BC against Maya and made peace in 570BC, leaving them with one city. In this war my golden age also started in 750BC.
- Germans: started in 570BC, ended in 490BC, leaving them with one city.
- Inca: started in 530BC, ended in 450BC, leaving them with one city.
- America: started in 490BC, ended in 390BC, leaving them with two cities.
- France: started in 410BC, ended in 330BC, leaving them with one city.
- England: started in 330BC, ended in 250BC, leaving them with two cities.
During the England war I completed The Temple of Artemis in Tenochitilan.
- Spain: started in 290BC right after they completed the Pyramids, this was the first war in which I used Knights. It ended in 210BC, leaving them with one city. At this point I had 44 horsemen and 20 knights (and 65 workers!!!!).

The Spain-war was followed by a full turn of complete peace!!! But that couldn’t last long of course! So:
- Portugal: started in 190BC, ended in 50BC, leaving them with one city.
- Mongols: started in 190BC, ended in 70BC, leaving them with two cities.
- Russia: started in 170BC, ended in 50BC, leaving them with 3 cities.
- Second Maya war: started in 130BC, destroyed them in 90BC.
- I also destroyed the Germans in 90BC.

Domination victory in 30BC with 9 of the 11 tribes still alive and kicking.

Game status: Domination Victory for Aztecs
Game date: 30 BC
Firaxis score: 7061
Jason score: 11952
Time played: 36:11:40
-> I kept civ running for a full day, the actual playing time was around 10 hours.

Gone for a Conquest Victory and beaten by 50 points.

Date 530 AD
Jason Score 10848

I managed 2 major plunders:
Losing my first Army to the Barbarian invasions (I put it into the path of the riders and survived with 2 HP. Next turn I ignored the single warrior left and just slept to heal. ell the Warrior won)

And i lost a turn in the end because I forgot that I would still have to attack the last russian city, after my first Expedition corps proved one HM to few.

Ok now I try tzo give a few more details.

After getting Rep + HBR I shut Research down to a slow trickle. I didn't stop it completely as I play higher Diff normally and Horses go out fo style too early there.

Also I was left with the impression,. that the Dutch would not be on the main landmass, as I had got a good feel for that by sending 3 Jag Warriors around. When everybody in the first spoiler found 10/11 AIs I decided to slowly research up to Navigation, getting it about 15 turns before it was needed. Since there was nothing to really spend money on, I then also researchd at 20% for Chiv updating my units for the killing of Mongol + Netherlands.

In general I wasted a lot of time by not using my workers efficiently to build military roads instead of improving the third and forth ring which was not helpful anyway.
That hurt in every new war, as reinforcements were slowed down in reaching the front.

Also I wasted some time waiting for cities to grow to size 2 or Capitals to create culture leaving my horses standing still too long.

Maya gave me quite some creep with always flipping on and off so it took about 3 tries to finally get them down.

in 40 turns before the end I decided I had finally enough units and it was time for the final push.

Made peace with all enemies and signed ROP with all remaining neighbours (Port, France, Germany). 8 turns later my units in france and Portugal were ready so I signed ROP with Spain Russia and Mongol too and then declared on Portugal and France.

I had a small hickup at Portugal (where I was one horse short) and then later in Russia, where a Spanish settler was sitting on the chokepoint between my army and the city it was meant to capture in turn 1. But in russia the plan was from the get go too leave there northermost cities for the mopup-force and move on to Mongolia as fast as possible.

Spain fell also in 1 turn providing me with a jkump of port for Netherlands.

Meanwhile the Mop-Up Force in russia prooved one horse too few, so I needed another 3 turns to roll in my jobless Armies.

Netherlands finsihed TGL in the turn before I landed, which would prove quite helpful. 2 tzurns later I attacked and took all cities in 1 turn, but they didn't disappear. But I had left the Lighthouse standing giving me exactly the needed +1 MP to reach there Pilgrims in 1 turn and finishing them of.

I then pressed immediately end turn only to be surprised by a continuing game. Some panically send out messengers later it was clear that General Acazulpo was still standing before Novgorod and waited for the attack orders. Well he would discuss whose fault was this with his forefathers and his successor easily took out the last village of resistance.

I think 530 AD is by far my best conquest game so far and I could probably have beaten 490 AD if I played more concentrated in the middle game.

I also missed out on the NWestern Wheat for ages, because my Scoutings jags had left exactly this spot unvisited. With 2 Settler factories the buildup would have been a bit faster I think.

Also I am not sure what is the most efficient way to handle all the open spaces you create.

In the beginning I was trying to settle them completely until I realized, that I would never use them, as I had no need for the money or the 1 HM each could build before the game would be over. So I just filled the space as loosely as possible to avoid Barbs popping up and stopped developing there land, but by then I had wasted a lot of worker turns already.

I am looking forward to next month and will try to learn from the errors.

Kulko, even though I didn't do nearly as well as you did, I did one thing this time that really helped fill in unused space was capturing the ToA and not let it go extinct.
