CRA02 AW Japan Monarch

Oh, when I dropped all my SG's this was dead. Sorry, you can drop me from the roster. :(

Any news on this?

I think the Civ 3 SG forum is slowly dying off. :(

Pre-flight:

Things look pretty reasonable, I don't change any builds.

IBT - We lose a spear but manage to repel the barbarian invaders.

Turn 1 - Currency comes in and we enter a new age. I set research to Feudalism (in 14) so we can get some Medieval Infantry going and I set a number of builds to markets to take advantage of our Golden Age. Kill a Russian spear and 3 archers (4-0).

IBT - We repel the remaining barb horses and watch the arabs knock off a few more barb horses for us.

Turn 2 - Kill 2 German Swords (6-0), kill 2 Arab spears but fail to take Khurasan (one redlined archer left...) (8-0).

IBT - zzz

Turn 3 - Kill another German sword (9-0) and get ready to raze Hannover and claim the spices.

IBT - our iron spear defends against a barb horse.

Turn 4 - Found Toyama to claim incense. I rush build walls for 80gp. I found Fukishima to claim the spices once we raze Hannover.

IBT - zzz

Turn 5 - Kill a Russian settler pair (10-0). Kill 2 german spear defenders and a german sword and burn Hannover (13-0).

IBT - zzz

Turn 6 - Kill 4 Russian archers (17-0). Kill 2 Arab spears at Khurasan and raze Khurasan (19-0).

IBT - zzz

Turn 7 - Kyoto completes its Market and goes onto Military duty, as does Osaka which will effectively give us a sword every turn during our GA and 2 every 3 turns afterwards. Kill 5 Russian archers (24-0) and generate another leader :)
With the FP completing in 10 turns anyway I make another army. I put our only AC in it (hold it in reserve for the immediate future, and it can go on offensive duty once it gets a 2nd AC).

IBT - We lose our leader-generating sword on the counter (24-1), our spear on the mountain beside Toyama does his job and draws the approaching German sword into an unfavourable battle that we win (25-1).

Turn 8 - Kill 2 more Russian archerss (27-1) and a German archer (28-1). Move forces to start to attack Russia.

IBT - Our mountain spear defeats another German sword (29-1). Spice road completes.

Turn 9 - With spices in I'm able to drop our lux slider to 10% this lets us up science by 10% and gets us Feudalism in 3. I suggest we run to Chivalry, then turn off Science and let the GLib do it's job. Kill 2 Arab spears (31-1) and raze Damascus

IBT - Portugal shows up off our eastern coast. Russia starts Sun Tzu's meaning they have Feudalism (luckily they have neither horses nor iron).

Turn 10 - Portugal is still in the Ancient Age. They have nothing of value so I simply DoW. Kill 2 Russian archers and a Russian spear (34-1) and move our forces next Yekaterinburg.

I leave some movement choices for the next player.

Here's the way I see things:

Germany is the only potential threat as they have swords. Everyone else has neither iron nor horses. I think we should send the AC army to Germany to take out their remaining iron. Our next leader should either form a MI army or wait till we have Samuari and form a Samuari army. A Sam Army would be pretty much invincible till the IA.
We should hold any cities that have useful wonders in them but raze everything else. This means that we will need lots of Settlers (I suggest cash-rushing them) to fill the empty spaces. There's a lot of open, potentially fertile land that will make useful specialist farms to help our research.
Oh and based on the layout of the map (and subsequently our fronts) I think we should take our either Arabia or Russia first. Maybe make a push against Arabia with the AC and sword armies once Germany's iron is gone as we can probabably settle their lands without competition. I have a non-army force moving in on Russia to our North.

Here's the save.

I agree with the Samurai army. Besides, I'm very unlucky so I dont think we'll be getting another leader anytime soon :p I shall play either later today or sometime tomorrow.

Yes, that's what our next leader should do.

However, we should keep some towns around, preferably size two when we take them, so that we can heal units and form armies quicker. Plus, depending on the enemy road systems, razed cities may leave gaps, which would slow our glorious armies down.

Kibitzer:

Gentlemen I was wondering, if with the slow down in the game, it would be acceptable for me to take a set here?

Of course. I can't play for now cause my computer is in the shop. This would have been avoided if i had played my set, but I didn't cause I was lazy. Sorry guys. It's coming back in a bit, so I'll play after vmxa.

Pre::
Rename First Leader to Horsemen-1 so it will be easier to tell what it is later.
Sell wall in Kyoto as it is a city now.
Edo same, sell the wall.
Satsuma is making a court, not something I would do in an AW, but since it is on a std map and at Monarch level I guess you could do that. Usually you need to be making troops.
Nagasaki another crt, switch to cat. I doubt it will be worth the trouble to slip in a crt here and after the GA ends it will just take longer. It may actually need a rax for defensive healing, but probably not in this game.

Shimonoseki making a crt, just not seeing that here. It is a town with 3 flat tiles and only one is grass. This means little food and a smallish size. I would not make a crt nor a market here, just let it make workers or settler or cats (meaning bombardment units of the latest type). No attackers here right now and it is on the border and near coast. So it may make use of an attacker. Switch crt to sword, just in case.

Matsuyama switch crt to settler as none on hand. At AWM it ususally is hard to keep up enough settlers and workers. The best thing at this point is to fill the land and kill off anyone on the landmass. IIRC this is a continents map, so we would need to rail up and ready a fleet to invade as soon as can be done without over extending.

Sapporo switch crt to settler.
Hakodate switch from lib to settler and it can go 333 and fill in the land perfectly.
Ise probably should switch market to aqua, but leave it as is for now.
Toyama switch the temple to worker.

Fukushima crt > worker.
Nara market > settler. It has jungles tiles and is size 5. This makes it hard to grow, may as well pop out settlers.

IBT:
Henry's boat turns around.
German sword attacks spear by Toyama and dies (1-0) [1-0].
Republic granted by GLB.
Tokyo finsihed HE and starts a market.

310AD (T146-1):
Preferences turn on color blind as my color palette is 31 colors.
Turn off animations for Friends and all except battles.

First battle an eSword kills Russian spear and makes a leader at Yek.
vSword dies on spear at Yek (1-1)
vSword kills the spear and we capture Yek. I did not use the elite sword as we had a leader and I would rather risk the loss of the vet as they will be replaced by MDI. Form an empty army named 3rd. (2-1)

Sword covers three slaves roading towards Yek. I would have preferred those slaves be on the grass 3 from where they are working the mountain. We could get a road up sooner on grass. We get 2 slaves from Yek and they move to grass tile to get a road started next turn.
Drop research to 20%.

Wish I knew when the last AC popped out. I would like to send it to Arabian front to protect towns there. I renamed all armies as sword to 1st. AC to 2nd and empty to
3rd. It is a lot easy to mention armies in a post by a name. I use numbers as early armies tend to get disbanded at some point and I then have a new 1st, 2nd etc.

IBT:
barb galley dies attacking Henry's boat.

320AD (T147-2):
Start on Engineering as I suspect we will get Mono from GLB. Kyoto starts Sun Tzu as I have no doubt we can beat Russia to it. I do not start the Pentagon as we are already too low on troop building. Will wait for another town to finish its current build. I rush a barracks in Yek so we can get some of these damaged units healed asap. Cost 76 gold as we had one turn in on a settler.

Looking at the tech report it seems Germany and Russia both have Feud and Mono, so we will get Mono free. I guess they each got a tech and traded it. In fact I now see that guess is correct. They each had one MA tech for two turns and now both have both techs now. Surely they traded! If the one with Feud had waited, it would have
dropped in value as we learned it on the IBT.

I like to get Engineering to allow us to cross rivers. The loss of movement can be very expensive in AW, IF you are under pressure.

1st steps into the Caliph's land and spots an unescorted settler moving about. Wow at war and raging barbs and they are sending out a lone settler.

Send 4 cats from Edo to Nara. Upgrade a spear and the sword in Nara to go off to fight. Add a horse from Edo.

IBT:
Cathy sends 3 archers to Yek and I see a spear/settler next tile over.

We get Mono.

330AD (T148-3):
Found Suo east of Nagoyo. We have a couple of settlers and need some pikes to take them out.
2nd gets the third AC and heads out.
Have to stop lone slave on incense as a German sword parks next to it. 2 other swords from Bismark are next tile over.
eSword and vSword kill archers at Yek with no loss of HP for either (2-0).
4/5 sword kills the last archer at Yek (3-0) [6-1].

IBT:
Germans start Sun Tzu.
Russian combo turns around.

340AD (T149-4):
eHorse kills sword on incense (1-0).
1st kills spear in Mecca (2-0).
vSword kills Russian archer headed towards Yek from the west (3-0).
eArcher kills Arabian archer near Nagasaki (4-0).
Send out a sword and settler from Mat.
Upgrade a pike in Shim to go with settler to plains 114.
[10-1]

IBT:
nada 3

350AD (T150-5):
Upgrade a pike in Yokohama that I will swap with a spear in Toyama.
eHorse kills a German sword near those two towns (1-0).
1st kills 2 spears in Mecca (3-0).
vHorse kills second sword at Toyama (4-0).
2nd kills sword on mountain at Toyama (5-0).

IBT:
nada
[15-1]

360AD (T151-6):
I noticed a slave has irrigated the cow at Edo? At least the FP is going to finish this turns. Not sure if that was an accident or not and will leave it for now. We are so short on workers that I cannot connect even the safer towns.

1st kills 2 spears and razed Mecca and the Oracle (2-0). It will do us little good as we should have few temples and it will go obsolete, before you get them up. It is also far from the nearest town and requires troops we do not currently have to sit on it and defend. Got 7 slaves, thank you.

2nd kills the last German sword near Toyama (3-0).
eSword kills Russian archer at Yek (4-0).
eSword kiils another (5-0). [20-1]

IBT:
2 more archers and the settler combo enter Yek's borders.

370AD (T152-7):
Found Echizen. I preferred to go to the jungle tile, but a Russian town prevents that and is not going to be razed right away.

Found Izumi. BTW I started a wall in these last two towns, but may be able to switch to a worker, if we can push the neighbors back in time.

Incense online finally.

vMDI kills the interloping German spear. Not going to put the "v" before vets as that is a given. Will denote non vets (1-0).
Archer kills Russian archer and goes elite at Yek (2-0).
3/5 sword kills one (3-0).
eSword kills the spear combo (4-0).
eHorse kills Russian archer near Echizen, probably will be killed next turn (5-0). No units in sight, but... (turns out no one came)
2nd kills a pike and a spear in Stutgart and it autorazed (7-0).
1st is healing as it got down to only a couple of HP. Waiting to get a road to Yek to upgrade swords to put into 3rd.

Had to switch Yek to worker so I could get another specialist to make them happy as the troops were out of town fighting and no road yet.
[27-1]

IBT:
Note I have a no barracks pike going up in Fukushima. At the time I was thinking a 3hp pike is better than nothing, but not so desperate for one now. Still they will serve as a cheap MP as nothing else to switch to currently.

380AD (T153-8):
Switch Ise to settler, we need to get the land on the Arabian side filled. That would also make the iron safe forever.
1st kills Arabian settler combo, had to do it. This puts the 7 slaves at risk and maybe the 2 new ones. I would rather stop the new town and hope the slaves can get away. May not be killed as they would be native to Arabia.
(1-0)

Oh oh, I see smoke from the volcano next to the iron. I move the spear away, just in case. There is another iron not far from Toyama.
[28-1]

390AD (T154-9):
1st finds a German spear with a settler, but cannot reach it this turn. Slaves still heading home so far.
Switch Toyama from rax to settler.
Ise market as placeholder for likely another settler. Got 3 swords upgraded in Yek and will be able to send out the 3rd next turn.

1st still not allowed to heal and kills another German combo (1-0).
MDI kills archer at Yek (2-0).
3rd kills one (3-0).
eSword kills last archer at Yek and makes a leader at Yek. I move it to Yek and leave it to the next one to decide to rush Pentagon or make another army.
3rd move to Russian town.
Bizen switched wall to worker.

Sold wall in Satsuma.
Sold wall in Yokohama.
Sold temple in Shimonoseki.
Switch Ise to settler.
(4-0) [32-1]

Notes: not much really. Taxman in Osaka can be switch to science after breakthrough. It does not lower time so I took the gold.

Kyoto was an oversight. I did not realize it did not have a temple and now we are well into the wonder.

I would sell off the granaries in the core as soon as they hit size 12.
I went ahead an put the two slaves on jungle at Hakodate. Not my favorite way to deal with jungle, but those towns will need work or be stiffled.

I had seen a barb camp down south of the slaves, but have no units to deal with them. Not sure why we have not had an uprising, maybe it was already done? They seem to only have warriors.

A coule of towns on wealth to ease the finances for a few turns, till we can get more settlers in place to reduce the unit cost.

From my set it seems that no one has any units to even make a wave. No one has come out after the 9 slaves I was trying to get back in the fold.
