Crash during the speech when creating new game

Firstly, when I tried to open Civilization, I had the error that would occur during the opening video. I used the fix of disabling the intro video which would allow me to the main menu. However, when trying to start a new game, during the chosen king/emperors speech, the game will crash to desktop. All of my drivers are up to date, I have tried reinstalling the game and multiple times I have tried redoing Direct x 9. I have lowered the fog of war settings and tried almost every fix I have come across. The error started off with saying "Dwwin.dll initilization has failed" however now it has become just "Sid Meiers Civilization has experience an error"

Is there a fix I am missing? Do I need to post more information?

The very same problem.
iCore920
3 Gb RAM
GeForce 8800 GTS
latest DirectX, latest drivers
using Dx9
Windows XP with latest service pack

All you need to do is turn "Leader Scene Quality" in your video settings down to minimum and I promise you will have no further issues.

(Promise is such a strong word!)

Seems to be a memory issue when dealing with larger maps. The game has to load in too much overhead with so many civilizations and freezes while creating the map.

I would also recommend turning your Fog of War level to Low as well.

I have the same issue! When I start a game it crashes while the guy is telling me about my Civ! I have a Dell XPS 630i, Windows Vista (64 bit & SP2), 8 GB of RAM, DirectX 11, Intel Core 2 Quad CPU 3.0GHz, and an ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series. I was able to start my first game fine, I believe there were 5 Civs total on a huge map. Then I did 6, then 22. On the one with 22 it kicked me out and stopped working! I will try one with small amount of civs again.

BTW when it kicked me out, Steam said that Civ 5 was syncing. It never stopped saying that. I've since restarted my computer and it still didn't work.

Will this be fixed? I know for sure that it isn't my computers fault.

OK, just tried it again with only a few Civs. Still didn't work.

BTW DirectX 9 works just fine. I will have to play it with this for now, but look forward to when I can play with DX11. And again it worked on my first few games, the first night I played until 1:30.

I have the same trouble. The only thing differing from official system requirements is the graphic card NVIDIA Quadro NVS 135M (in a DELL Latitude D830 laptop). It is not a GeForce, but has 256M memory, too. What do you think?

Other system properties are MS Windows XP Professional SP3, Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T8300 @ 2.4 GHz, 3.5 GB RAM. DirectX 9.0c.

Tried disabling intro and turning all graphics quality settings to the lowest values, incl. screen resolution. Tried both fullscreen and window and VSync options. Started up after fresh reboot with duel map and 2 civs.
