Crash on start of ANY new single player game

Hi all,

Since the last patch, I cannot get any new single player game to start. Regardless of settings, every single game (I have tried to launch around 20, each with different settings) crashes midway through the beginning animation, right when the leader script animation normally moves over and you can see the map. Has anyone else come across this problem? Anyone have any solutions?

I'm having the same problem. Things go along fine until I get to the Bismark screen (I play as German) with the pulsating "Loading" dialog. It loads until I get my cursor back and the "working" globe goes away and then it's lockup time. Only thing to do is reboot. I well meet the recommended requirements (Phenom quad core 9850, 4 gig Ram, Nvidia 450GTS w/1G Ram) except for operating system. I'm still on XP SP3. If I'm persistent and keep trying to start the game, it eventually works, but I may have to reboot 6 or 7 times. This only started after Steam (ugh - who thought they were a good idea?) patched the game.

I've been playing with the video settings and have the game consistently starting now. I can't believe I had to turn down some of the settings to less than "high" with the video card I have, but that seems to have been the problem. If you're experiencing similar problems getting the game to start, try the default setting for video options and take them up one at a time. That's how I got it to work.
