This would happen before R&F, too. I eliminate a leader, they do their little "I can't believe it" spiel then you have the screen with them posed and when you hit escape or click the 'Goodbye' button the game freezes.
Sometimes delaying their death a turn or two works, sometimes not. I almost want to eliminate the leader animations altogether. I'm pretty sure all of my crashes have been when transitioning to or from map screen to one of the leader animation screens.
