Crashing?

Environment: Win XP, C3C with beta patch. Custom scenarios with 160 added units and 80 added resources (all tested and working).

I followed all of the instructions here, and have added 33 improv/wonders to my scenario. When I play the scenario, it crashes just after I build the first city. It seems to be having a problem opening the City Screen - which must be where the problem is. No error message, the application just disappears. I have hypothesized on some potential reasons, but need help.

Possible Reasons:

1 - I have too many units and buildings for the build queue to handle

2 - Problems with the order of the entries in Editor and pcx files.

3 - ????????????

Regarding Reason 2, I have sequenced the entries from the Editor to align with the entries in the small and large pcx graphics files. I made my first entry #83 as Knights of Templar is #82, and then wrote the civilopedia entries to align with each succeeding entry.

After reading further, I saw there was a problem with places 81, 83, etc.. I then changed the civilopedia numbers starting my entires with #86. Still no luck.

Also, I am confused about the #s in the Wonder Entries. It seems like PTW and C3C don't use numbers in the pediaicons any longer. I can't figure any of this out. Can someone shed some light on this?????

I have no idea how to solve the problems, or why any of them are happening. But I pretty sure that if you put your question in the right place (Main Creation and Customization Forum), you'd get more answers. BTW: Sounds like you've gone through a lot of work for this scenario. Zulu must be fallen' down on his job, too . Good luck.

Chances are, there's something in your build queue at the start of the game that isn't set up right. I think that you might not have updated the units32 file correctly. You've got a lot of extra units - are they all on the units32 file? If any units fall into the build queue that don't have a valid entry in this file, the game crashes without a message.

I hope this helps!

BTW, this thread has done the best part of a full day in this forum with no sight of Zulu. I can't understand it - it's not quite hogmany yet, surely? ;)

Well, for a while this was in my Building & Wonder graphics library. :D

Ehhh. I screwed up posting it there. By the time I ready through every entry - more than 30 minutes, I hit reply and sent a message without realizing it. My apologies.

Regarding units, I have tested all of them and they work fine in the build queue. Also, when I delete the new improvement entries in the same scenario, it works just fine. I have played this scenarios several times before adding the new improvements.

I have reviewed several completed mods, to see if I can replicate a scenario with added buildings/wonders. Every one I find is done prior to C3C or has replaced/renamed existing slots. I am pretty sure the problem is in the numbering on the pediaicons.txt and some hardcoding on existing slots. I have tried a few different numbering options and it still crashes whenever I enter the city view screen. Has anyone figured their way through this problem??

I have found that the number I use in the pediaicons text for the small/large pcs files corresponds to the slot number on the graphics file. I have proved this out, because, when I change the number, the graphic in the editor changes to whatever corresponding graphic shows up in the pcx file. As such, you a probably right. The slot numbers are OK. What else could cause the crash?

Has anyone figured out the buildings issue? I thought others were having the same problem as I am.

So your mod works perfectly with C3C until you added the new buildings?

I mean you are able to build your new units and use them ok without the new buildings?

I never use number in pediaicons, they are not need other than if they help you to follow what you are doing!

I have played this mod all the way through. It only crashes when I add the buildings. Perhaps, you are correct, about the numbering. When I look in the pediaicons, all the buildings/wonders have a number embedded into the entry. Are you saying to eliminate that entire line? I have tested this back and forth and that is the only tactic I have not tried.

forget about the numbers you can have them or not it makes no difference its ok to keep them.

So you start a game with everything in and build your first city and as the city screen opens the game crashes but gives no error? Is this correct?

Correct. Once the city is built, there is a slight delay and then the screen goes completely black and the application just terminates without an error message or any evidence that it was running. It confounds me. If I take the same scenario and cut out the new buildings/improvements, the scenario is playable.

As far as I understand if there is a problem with one of your buildings, the game might crash but only when that particular building is accessed. Have you added any new buildings that a race could build or start to build on turn one? If so pull them.

As a last resort you could try adding them one at a time to see which one is giving you the trouble not ideal but an option!

Maybe just try one to make sure you know exactly what your doing, and then add more when your sure you can get at least one to work.

Good luck!

I tried all of that. I added just one building and it crashed. I give up. My alternative is to edit existing buildings/improvements. I am disappointed because every other technical obstacle I have encountered, have been resolved. This one is just a thorn in my side.
