Conquer a christian county and steal their courtiers.

I started a new game with the A Game of Thrones mod and chose Eddard Stark in the aftermath of Baratheons rebellion.

After several years I managed to marry my eldest son, Robb to Roberts eldest daughter, Jocelyn, then Robert croaks. No issues here, I backed his son in the civil war that followed, as did all the other Lord Paramounts, we easily crushed Lord Renly of the Stormlands.

Then the son croaks at 19, his 1 year old heir takes the throne, once again the Lord Paramounts support his rule and side with him. When this war ends things start getting weird.

Eddard's wife, Catelyn is a Lady of Riverrun, and her brother, Edmund, now rules in Riverrun, but he dies a strange death (suspected foul play by one of his vassals.) Riverrun falls into civil war, in which Edmunds daughter wins and preserves Riverrun. Fast forward 2 more years then the daughter also dies, through the laws of inheritance, my wife now becomes Lady Paramount of Riverrun while I am Lord Paramount of the North.

Immediately the lords of Riverrun rebel against my wife and since this is the 4th major war in Riverrun in 4 years, my wife has little manpower left to fight for her throne. I was fully ready to march in her support with 24k northerners, but I never got the call nor did I have the ability to support her politically. Which made me upset because when I die and she dies, Robb would inherit both kingdoms. But I played through it, somehow, miraculously, my wife wins the war and peace returns to Riverrun for 4 years.

Then my wife dies and Riverrun goes to my son, Robb. Again, immediately there is a rebellion and this time my son loses and becomes Lord of Harrenhal. I have continuously tried to support my son in his war and waited for a call to arms which never came.

Is there something I am missing? Is there a reason why I cannot support my wife or my son in their wars? (If it matters, both wife and son had high opinions of me and vice versa)

As it stands when I die, Robb will inherit Winterfell and the North and with their powerful 25K strong army can retake his position as Lord Paramount in Riverrun, especially now that King Alaric Baratheon supports the Starks given their long history of supporting the Baratheon crowns in defending their throne. The most recent being against the Lannisters who threw up a halfhearted attempt to take the throne only to be crushed by the armies of Winterfell and the Reach.

An hour or two ago I got a new lover and then later concubine. I just now realized that she's my daughter and we have a daughter.

I need to go to bed because I accidentally condoned incest.

Succesfully became the saoshyant with North korea mode, on easy, and now im doubting to continue cause i have a quite big tyrant penalty with my family. Also, dont seem to get many kids in the second generation, and having an inbred would be nice for the achievement.

Can you change the difficulty with a game thats already going (in ironman)?

Does anyone know how education works in AGOT? I had 18 stewardship and 4 star steward education, but the kids I tutored never went above 8 stewardship and got 1 star educations. Which is terrible.

edit: I also paid craptons of money for their educations. Earlier it was only like 100 but now it's 250.

Just don't be gavelkind

In certain circumstances (like if you do have gavelkind, which if you do get out of it asap) giving a title or two or more to your heir when you're in old age but before you die can make the succession easier.

Gah.

I just spent 15 years building up France, taking back the Duchy of Normandy and giving it to my brother, and befriending my vassals only to die (5% chance!) on a hunt celebrating the reunification of the country after my stupid 67yo Uncle tried to overthrow my rule.

I suppose it's for the best, though, since my wife was the Tuscan Duchess, Matilda, and wouldn't ever have conjugal vacations with me. This way I might actually have an heir.

Rule #1 of CK2: Whenever things appear to be going well, something bad is about to happen

Yeah, now all my vassal opinions (for the whole of France!) that were at 80-100 are like 15-50 :(

I swear my original king was on his way to sainthood

Rule #1 of CK2: Whenever things appear to be going well, something bad is about to happen

Very true.

In my first serious game, my Irish King had just found out his newly born child was a genius child. Awesome, right? Nope, king dies literally within a year and now this genius, the king's cousin starts a civil war that cripples the country and then that same cousin becomes regent... Jesus. But things improve, right? The genius child grows up and endures under his dad's cousin's tyranny, and when he finally becomes an adult imprisons that treacherous traitor, and becomes the greatest king ever... and then proceeds to die of depression at an early age, plunging the kingdom into chaos again because of a child ruler.

There was another time I was playing as a west African in my VIET mod. So my first character is uber-awesome (ruler designed), blah blah blah... And consequently dies in battle in it's thirties against the evil Berbers. No matter, his son has just barely come of age and is an attractive genius. Awesome, right? Nope, same son dies two years later in battle and leaves the realm to his underage brother. But hey, thankfully this underage brother is a genius too! And this underage brother survives! And avenges his brother and father... and then dies in battle, leaving his two year old to rule.

It's like every time the game gives you hope it screws over you again.

Well, I just had a brilliant session with Ireland (admittedly with some cash assistance to consolidate Ireland, as I've little interest in playing petty at the moment). My first ruler lived to 1106, accruing over 10,000 prestige and almost 4,000 piety, and winning the titles of Ireland, Gwynned, and Jerusalem. The three duchies of Jerusalem were divided among his three sons after the crusade. Unfortunately, a 20,000-strong Fatamid army swore Jihad soon after, and so to encourage the defense of the Holy Land, the kingdom was entrusted to my youngest child, a homosexual genius. (My demesne was entirely in Ireland, so I couldn't muster any sort of proper defense – my sons' manpower was useless in my hands, under 2,000 men, when they were capable of much more.)

A few years later, King Dúngal 'the Hunter' passed, and Ireland was given to my grandson, as his father had died in battle during the jihad. Although Fingal, the new King of Jerusalem, was an amazing diplomat (21), calling in many thousands of troops from several alliances he had made himself during his short reign, even these were not enough to secure the Holy Land from a second jihad. The army of Jerusalem, nearly 10,000 strong, had been wiped out in the first jihad, and it could not even muster out 2,000 now.

The Papacy would be its savior, though not from a second crusade; the Irish regent gave the Pope his ducal share of Jerusalem. The Pope arrived shortly thereafter with an army of 10,000 to secure the Holy Land once again, and peace was established for the time being.

Meanwhile, in Ireland, my regent has been switched four times in two years; political machinations are everywhere. I hope I can keep a grip on my emerald isle.

Currently in the Norse game; went from a little land in Brittany to a prepared invasion of Wessex, that eventually leaded to the Norse Kingdom of England. My current char got

Spoiler :

Once more Tuesday is upon us and it is time to unleash some more facts about Rajas of India upon your unsuspecting minds. This time, I thought I'd go through some of the major features we're adding in the free part of the expansion, i.e. patch 2.1.

First up, I think you might be interested in the parts of the new map that are actually outside India; the regions of Afghanistan, Transoxiana and Siberia. Part of my reason for wanting to extend the map to the east was to get these areas into the game. If you consider the old edge of the map, you might have noticed that many counties are truncated, or in the wrong place. Places like Balkh and Samarkand were deemed important enough to be on the old map even though they are in reality located off the eastern edge. This is perhaps most obvious around the Urals, where we even have an "Omsk" province. With the new map, these provinces could finally be put in the right place. Of course, we still needed to add a lot of new counties as well, which meant we also needed some more cultures. Thus, we now have this situation:
  • The Cumans are intrinsically more powerful
  • There is a Kirghiz state to their east, with its own culture
  • There is Karluk (new culture) state south of Lake Balkhash
  • There is a Khanty (new culture) realm north of the Cumans
  • The whole region of Afghanistan, with new Afghan and Baluch cultures
  • More counties in Khorasan / Greater Persia
Tibet, the Tarim basin and the Altai mountains are visible on the map, but we decided not to add any provinces to those regions.

There are changes to the old parts of the map as well. We had to trim the western edge slightly to get the map dimensions right, and there are many changes to province borders and positions in the Middle East, the steppes and the far North East. We have even added some new counties, like Lori in Armenia. The most dramatic change is, however, in East Africa. We decided to take this opportunity to make East Africa more interesting, so we added Nubian culture and completely revised all the provinces south of Egypt and added about a dozen more. This allowed us to add the fascinating Jewish state of Semien (a.k.a. Beta Israel) to Abyssinia.

Right, that's enough about the map I think, I'll just let the screenies speak for themselves. A related thing we've done is to allow ports and ship movement in completely separate oceans; a feature that has been much requested. The AI now understands how to handle this, which was always the biggest hurdle. So you can now have a Buddhist merchant republic in the Maldives and build trade posts all the way to the Suez, etc.

As usual, we've also spent a lot of effort improving the base game. I'll cover a couple of the changes today, and the rest next Tuesday. Now, one of the most drastic improvements we have made is to faction revolts. No more will the revolters be mere allies in a war against their liege; they will now be temporary vassals of the faction leader in a proper civil war. In other words, you will be fighting these wars against a more unified and powerful enemy (or fight as them, of course.) Naturally, these rebel lieges will be very limited in their diplomacy and plotting until the war is over.

The AI has received another round of improvements, most notably in how it moves, raises and dismisses armies, but also when and why it revokes titles off vassals (it tended to create a lot of unnecessary internal strife while still failing to maintain reasonable internal de jure borders.)

One little thing that's always annoyed me is that you can't easily go to a dead character's killer, so we now show a red skull on characters who have a known killer. You can simply click the skull to go to the killer.

Lastly for today, we decided to add a new tab to the character view, called "Relations". The main reason was to add Rivals and Friends (a very underused concept in the game), but it also allows us to show Lovers, etc.

PS. Crusader Kings II; Rajas of India livestream info:
The Crusader Kings 2 team has been working hard the past months on our next expansion, Rajas of India.
As before with The Old Gods and Sons of Abraham we'll be doing a showcase to show you the grandiose sub-continent of India.

When?
Today, Tuesday, at 20:00CET

Where?
On our official channel on Twitch;
http://www.twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive

I can't make that time :<
No worries, we'll be posting the presentation as well as the highlights onto our YouTube channel;
https://www.youtube.com/user/ParadoxExtra

Highlights from dev diary, and thread: (some taken from reddit)

  • East Africa revamp way more impressive than I expected - Nubian culture confirmed, many new provinces
  • New Central Asian cultures, including the Kirgiz, karluk, khanty, afghan, and Baluch
  • Indian Ocean will be separate sea zone
  • Character with a known killer will have a red skull - if you selective it you can go to the killer
  • Lovers, friends, and rivals are now in a separate tab on the character screen - maybe we will see more stuff concerning that in the future?
  • Independence factions will split up upon winning the war, so the end result will be as before.
  • Seljuk and Timur are more involved now. They will actually exist as characters for ten years before they embark on their conquests. The Mongols are as before, but they arrive at the new edge.
  • Leaders of vassal revolts will gain a temporary title like adventurers until war is over.
  • If Seljuk and Timur happen to appear in your court, you will be able to interact with them (including giving them land).
  • Faction leaders of vassal revolts control your liege levy, but you can help with your own troops, just like vassals can in regular wars.

And a summary of the stuff from the stream, link to of reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/paradoxplaza/comments/1zk6eo/rajas_of_india_twitchtv_livestream_summary/

Personal highlights:

  • Ibadi it's own branch of Islam
  • Buddhism split into Mahayana and Theravada, though devs admit it's an oversimplification
  • Decadence now based on a decadent trait
  • Religion modifiers are now possible (great for mods like mine)
  • Hindus can pick a personal patron deity, as well as a house branch (for their dynasty, I guess?)

Religion modifiers are now possible (great for mods like mine)
Does that refer to the "all followers of x religion get +y% bonus to z troop?"

Does that refer to the "all followers of x religion get +y% bonus to z troop?"

Possibly, though we don't know what kind of existing modifiers they'd work like. We do know however that the Buddhist learning bonus is based on this religious modifier (+5 learning at the time of the stream, though Johan said it will likely be reduced).
