CTIV-5: Peacenik Re-education Camp

Oh bum. I never thought of that. Sorry.
No problem. That is what happens when you try to write a funny write up and have to include silly references or side comments. I should have been explicit. It probably wasn't going to happen anyway - have to wait until you have a injured opponent and then send in the maces.

Ack, I'd hoped this wasn't going to end up being relevant, but looks like it is - I'm going to be away from tomorrow till Sunday so won't have a chance to play Civ prior to Monday :( So I guess I need another skip/swap. Sorry about that.

Turn 0 -- 2004 AD

I decide that the best plan for the Lyons-force is to head towards the interior. That may hopefully distract Nappy into sending troops after it, leaving perimeter cities lightly defended. Or it may result in the stack being destroyed. One of the two ... :crazyeye:

I don't like the wounded Cav/Cat outside Satsuma. Tank kills Cav.

I find some troops in Beshablik with a transport. I upgrade 3 Infantry and an Artillery and I hope to sneak them to France's western border.

IBT:

2 of our transports were sunk. Minor counterattack against the resting stack of infantry, a cav and something else was killed.

Edo falls.

Turn 1 -- 2005 AD

Zion: Tank > Tank
Karak: Artillery > Artillery
Shanghai: Tank > Tank
Berlin: Tank > Tank
Ning-Hsia: Tank > Tank

Satsuma is threatened. I decide to be offense-minded and move the Artillery down from Kyoto.
Artillery suicides, damaging the stack.
Tank kills infantry.
Tank kills Cavalry.
Tank kills Cavalry.
Infantry kills Cavalry.
Infantry kills Infantry.
Cavalry kills Grenadier.
Cavalry kills Artillery.

Only 1 Artillery remains, so that threat is mitigated.

Transport continues to run.

Two tanks delivered to Kyoto.

Power graph:

IBT:

Ok, our interior stack is decimated :smoke: The stack we had in the forest held on pretty well, though. Looks like we have an invasion force by Toulouse (nope, just destroyers).

Turn 2 -- 2006 AD

Turfan: Tank > Tank
Teot: Tank > Tank
Toulouse: Factory > Battleship

Toulouse sends a suicide transport to Satsuma (the transport can unload to it but it's exposed)

Hrm, this was a beneficial move:

Needless to say I drop the troops back off again.

Lyons is not as well-defended as it was before (there's a lot of troops sitting in Edo)...I start pushing towards it again.

IBT:

Transport is sunk as expected, nothing else happens.

Turn 3 -- 2007 AD

Vandal: Factory > Coal Plant
Tenoc: Tank > Tank

The retreating transport kills the frigate

Destroyer kills an empty transport hanging out by Kyoto, but takes a lot of damage and heals in Kyoto.

IBT:

Force outside Lyons is pretty much decimated :wallbash:

Turn 4 -- 2008 AD

Ning-hsia: Tank > Tank
Shimon: Arty > Tank
Osaka: Machine Gun > Machine Gun
Kyoto: Tank > Tank

First troops come from Edo. Artillery suicides. Tank kills Cav. Tank kills Cav. Tank kills Cav. Cav kills Tank (seriously).

Troops have landed near Besh. Artillery suicides. Tank loses to Tank  Infantry loses to Tank. Infantry kills Cav. Infantry kills Cav. Wounded Tank and Cav left.

IBT:

Lose the transport trying to get back to Besh.

Turn 5 -- 2009 AD

Alemanni: Tank > Tank
Satsuma: Tank > Tank

Cleaning up Besh: Infantry kills Cav. Infantry loses to Tank. Infantry defeats Tank.

I'm only going to play 5 because I'm afraid I'm just spinning wheels.

Alright, this is going to be tough. It seems like whomever goes on the offensive takes a beating; we may be at a virtual stalemate. Of course, if Nappy engaged these troops we may be in trouble:

Our Power is going down.

I don't know if I have any ideas of getting us out of this mess. Ruff Hi?

Here's the save:

yeah - leave it to the next player - looked tough. BTW - who is the next player?

:mischief:

EDIT: Sorry about the 3-man rotation right now ... feel free to make this a low priority game and only play 5 turns and take 72 hours.

No - actually that was my suggestion about what you should do. Didn't realize the next bunny was me.

Ok - will try and sneak in a battle or two. Avatar change was deliberate - fancy that.

Played another 10 rounds. I have a plan that seems to be working. Lost no cities, captured 1 french city. Full report in about 12 hrs.

Teaser - Battle Stats:
Units victorious while attacking : 32
Units victorious while defending : 21
Units defeated while attacking : 10
Units defeated while defending : 11

All in favor of Ruff_Hi playing the rest of the game? :wavey:

:D

No - don't make me. I have always been lucky with battle. You should see me play DND - those monsters don't stand a chance - the DMs hated me - I would suggest these outlandish plans, everyone would scoff and they (nearly) always came off.

However, I did lose a 95% battle today - full str tank against 25% injured calvary.

The Battle Plan
From ChrTh write up, it seems clear that the defenders are holding the day while the team going on offense is getting pounded. Also, reviewing the relative sizes our our civilizations, we should be able to 'out produce' Nappy. The only bottle neck there is getting out units to his shores. So, plan of attack:

1) find method of getting units to Nappy's island
2) build offensive units
3) pick weak targets and attack
4) sucker Nappy into attacking

To this end, I look into the possible sea routes. We have two cities on the different continents that are 5 tiles apart. Transports have a range of 5 - that was easy.

Plan Item 1) solved. I have all of our units on goto's to the embarkation city (Old Sarai). I have stopped most units short where I don't have enough turns left in my round. Some of these goto's might bleed into your rounds - sorry. I almost made it a rally point but thought I would discuss first.

With regards to 2) ... I mainly built tanks but I did build some artillary (more later) and some explorers (currently being built - should be promoted to combat I + medic and stationed with advancing units or in cities at the front). I also changed our civs to vasselage (+2XPs) and state property (reduced maintaince).

Re artillary ... promote them to take down walls (Accuracy: +10% bombard, available after City Raider I or Barrage I). You need 4 unpromoted (or 3 promoted) units to completely remove the city defenses. These units should only be used for this - no suiciding artillary. They are fully effective with bombard even if they only have 1 hit point left. Leave the collateral damage to the tanks. The reason for this is that replacing tanks in the advancing group is easier (movement 2 tiles per turn) than replacing artillary (movement 1 tile per turn).

On 3) ... do we have some cities that give extra XPs (West Point?) - build a few Explorers (in addition to the Explorers-medics) there and give them movement promotions or Sentry: +1 visibility (this might be tough as they would need Combat III). Alternate suggestion: we get some cavalry in the group with flanking and sentry promotions. When we have the movement promoted Explorers, place these units in the attacking groups, use them to scout - I think they have 4 tiles of movement (2 out then back to the advancing group). Move them first to work out which way you want the main group to go.

Lyons had only 3 defenders and fell to bombarding artillary (lost the +105% defense multipler) and a 6 tank attack (3 lost, 3 won). I razed the city for the following reasons:
  • I am not planning to build anything there
  • I don't have any defenders
  • Nappy would just take it back
  • it removes his cultural control and makes movement easier for us

Re 4) - I didn't attack Nappy's super strong city in the north. He was using that city to marshall his units and he attacked Osaka. I had some artillary coming over and suicided them into his group (didn't I say no suiciding? - lets change that to no suiciding against cities!). I then let him attack our defenses and picked off the survivors.

He also landed some units from a transport near our southern ex-Japanese city (They are still there as they are on a hill and the attack win probability is not to my liking). I would suggest letting them splash themselves on our walls. That said, this city was only defended by 3 units. Nappy made a mistake of not attacking from the transport - he landed first giving me time to move some units from Osaka in defense. You can keep cities surrounded by our culture fairly empty as long as you watch the approach routes (shipping lanes or mountain passes). Keep the main defending strength a few tiles behind the lines - the same defending group can support both towns. When he sends units to attack, move your defensive units in - suicide some artillary as required. Benefits of this method - Nappy attacks, what to him, look like poorly defended cities and exposes his units. Downside - no fortification bonus for the newly arrived defenders.

I tried to sneak some transports from our southern port to our northern port but Nappy picked them off. How does he do this? See picture below. Nappy had a distroyer (8 movement pts) bombarding Kyoto. It was a permanent fixture there. I moved a transport along our coast (a good 5 or 6 tiles away). The very next round, he steamed right on over and sunk me. How did he do that? He didn't have spotters out so how did he know I moved my transport? He could have sailed his distroyer out for 4 tiles and then returned to Kyoto but I don't think he would have seen me. Anyone?

Earlier, I had a transport with 5 movement trying to run from a distroyer with 8. The tranport can get away into the fog, but I just kept going in the same direction as when I left - he found me next round and sunk me. I should have left going NE and then turned NW when I was outside his visual range - it would be an interesting experiment to see if he could find me then. I'm going to go back and play that round a few more times to test this theory.

I will post some screenies showing how I tried to move the transports later.

Wow, that was definitely some good turns there. YOU THE MAN!

Of course, if only there was a save

Scowler or pling: whoever the first to grab it (after the save is posted) is UP, and the other is ON DECK.

EDIT: Whoops, didn't see the To Be Continued ... ... I guess we'll wait patiently for the save :D

SECOND EDIT: Waitaminute, you added that just now! Cheater! :crazyeye:

Ah yes, the save. Put this up and went and got a coffee. Realized that I had forgotten the '... to be continued ...' part. Save will go up with that when I get home (4.5 hrs from now).

Or, I could just post it now as long as I don't get any comments about MM the cities!

Anyway, I was going to add that I started up research on flight ... aiming for choppers to help battle enemy tanks. I think that I should have checked WW (this is something that I always overlook). We might have to drop our research and invest in happy pills instead.

PS - I have 17mb on civfanatics (out of 20 max). What happens when I hit 20? How do I locate old files that I uploaded so I can delete them?

Wrong save deleted

Wow! Didn't think we (well, you guys, given I've been AWOL recently) were going to pull this round :goodjob:  I'm back & by tomorrow should be rested enough to apply some degree of thought to what I'm doing - so I can certainly play the next turnset, but if the save's not going to appear for 4.5 hours then Scowler will likely get a chance to get to it first as I'll be fast asleep by then (ie it'll be gone midnight my time) :)

Edit: OK, I've now seen the save just went up, so consider it grabbed - shan't be playing till tomorrow lunchtime though (as I said I'm not especially alert or with-it right now ;) ).

You can "manage attachments" from your User CP. Or you can do what I did: start using the Upload File at the bottom of the screen and putting it in the public directory. Pics I use the imageshack link for.

Stupid underscores. I looked at the bottom of the list of saves and uploaded that one. It had a title "CTIV-5_AD-2009.Civ4SavedGame". The one I wanted had the title "CTIV-5 AD-2019.Civ4SavedGame". The "_" put it in the wrong place - sorry.

For why the gains doth seldom quit the charge:
And so say I by proof too dearly bought,
My haste made waste; my brave and brainsick barge
Did float too fast to catch a thing of naught.
With leisure, measure, mean, and many moe
I mought have kept a chair of quiet state.
But hasty heads cannot be settled so,
Till crooked Fortune gave a crabbed mate.
As busy brains must beat on tickle toys,
As rash invention breeds a raw devise,
So sudden falls do hinder hasty joys;
And as swift baits do fleetest fish entice,
So haste makes waste, and therefore now I say,
No haste but good, where wisdom makes the way.
