Can anyone please help me with this obsession of having at least ONE producing culture building in every one of my cities?

That's an awfully contagious disease that one, cuz I'm suffering it as well :p

Well, the first step is admitting that you have a problem. :mischief:

Other than that, just remember the rule that applies to any and all buildings.

Only build an improvement if you are going to get an advantage out of it.

Reasons to build culture.
1. Need to claim territory (going for domination, city needs access to more squares, get a special tile)
2. Going for cultural victory (like I had to say it)
3. You need the cultural improvement for other reasons (happiness (rare), increased research, etc)

Times not to.
1. City's 27 tiles are already in your cultural boundaries
2. City is corrupt and only produces 1 commerce (Libraries will do no good)

Well, it's nothing to be ashamed of.

In addition to the reasons that Jeffelammer listed, I often build cultural buildings in towns that are vulnerable to flipping. I've never looked at the math as to whether this is effective or not, but it feels like it helps.

Besides which, it's nice to know that the subjects have access to the higher things, even out in the sticks.

I think you mean 21 tiles. Anyway towns (pop 6 or less) that are corrupt and will not be getting an aqua. Are not going to gain any land tiles from border expansion. No need for libs or temple and surely any more expensive culture building.

Once you see that towns can get by without any structures, you will start to get better about your addiction.

I am getting better -- still suffer from the disease, but feel that I really build them now for the *reasons* Jeff and Michael mentioned, especially early on.

A follow-up question, however

If a town is corrupt and thus will get no benefit from a Lib or whatever, then *what can you build with it anyhow*?? I mean, if you have a corrupt 6-size city where an aqueduct or culture structure just wont be worth it, what can you produce with 1 shield/turn? A tank will take you forever. In Older times, I suppose you could still make spearmen. But then I think -- what do I want with a military unit in 40 turns?

Thats what specialists are for. :p

Tax Collector and Scientist, or if you have C3C , Civil Engineer or Policeman(could make it a workable city.)

This topic is almost suggesting that ther may be some people who dont suffer this affliction. That cant be correct.

I cannot live with a library in every city. Since I'm planning to move up to a decent level (Regent) in my next game, I'm getting used to selling temples when no longer needed, but you can't take away my libraries. It'll be my only fix... :(

Workers are always good in the early game if the town has at least 2fpt. If not, I tend to build warriors for MP, or if I'm out of despotism (or nearly so) already, I might build a couple of catapults.

Catapults can be used as MP as well? Or are you just saying that you'll build catapults to use them? Sorry, just a little confused there :p

I'm sorry, but just wandering past ***** on my way here makes that very funny. Heheh, building the internet. Is there anything it can't solve?

And who cares if your city is at 6 and doesn't have aqua? You can still use the expanded culture zone to access better tiles, with bonuses on them. In fact, I had a game where my coastal city got SIX fish bonuses for its expansion :p

And... uh.... whats MP? Military Power?
