I'm currently playing an archipelago map on regent with the carths cause I wanted to try a victory condition that I haven't been able to get before on C3C. The goal is to get a 20K culture victory with a non-scientific civ. As we all know this victory condition was made a lot harder after they changed MGLs.

I've got 3K culture in 600 AD and I'm working on JS (already got the chapel). Currently getting 56 culture points per turn. Tech leader by 3-4 techs on the most advanced of the other civs, researcing astronomy. Has anyone that has played a 20K victory on C3C any clues on how to get there as soon as possible? I've had 4 MGLs so far so I'd have np in a pre-C3C game, but "only" one SGL (really none could be expected with a non-scientific civ).

Nope. I didn't get the ToA.
Ancient wonders: Colossus, Great Library, Great Lighthouse, The Mausoleum (sp?), Hanging Gardens.
As you prob can see I've got HUGE probs containing citizen moods. That's because I'm on an island with no lux and only one route by sea to another continent.

Lots of readers, but no posters?
You haven't tried it yet? :)

I'm currently playing as the English on a large archipelago map. It's 1950-ish, and I've got 15K+ culture in London with ~70 culture/turn. I can tell you, seafaring combined with archipelago is a great way of going for cultural win, even with a non-scientific civ - you can really control the rate at which the other civs get their techs, and of course make lots of cash off of it anyway.

I've spawned two Scientific Leaders (both called Sir Isaac Newton) : one was used to rush Adam Smith, and the other JSBach, both in London. I also managed the Temple of Artemis, Great Library, Knights Templar, Hoover Dam, Theory Of Evolution, Newton's Observatory all in London (there may be others (Magellan?), but my laptop is at home, and I'm *cough* at work right now  ).

The culture meter from the ToA is going off the scale, I couldn't tell you how much culture it is adding!

Seeing as this will be my first ever 20K win, I'll just make sure I control UN and cripple any enemy who tries to make a spaceship.

Thanks for answering.
Do you know how much culture you had around 600 AD?
Did you go for 20K right from the start?

920AD is the closest save game I still have. At that point, I have a total 5072 culture, London making up 2212 of that - I have the GL (built 570BC, for 840 culture) and ToA (built 550AD, for 132cp), giving London a total of 28 culture/turn.

It's now 2007AD, total culture = 83675, London is 18212, adding 76/turn. I have Great Library, Copernicus's Observatory, JSBach's Cathedral, Newton's University, Adam Smith's Trading Company, Hoover Dam, Theory of Evolution, Heroic Epic, Military Academy, Intelligence Agency, Temple of Artemis, Knights Templar, Battlefield Medicine in two turns time, and a partridge in a pear tree! ToA is worth 2028 culture, and GL is worth 4242! :king:

I wasn't aiming for any type of victory in particular - it just seemed to turn out like that, especially after getting Philosophy, with Literature as the freebie and getting a headstart on the Great Library, not that I got more than 2 techs from it before I got Education!

I selected a large map with small archipelagoes, and non-seafaring races (with Germans, Mongols and Russians to throw in some blood-thirsty types to keep me on my toes), so I could see just how good seafaring is as a civ-trait, especially with the changes to swapping communications/maps. I've been at war with everyone now, except for the Indians and Mayans, who both got wiped out early on by the Germans.

Yes, the GL is really only good for culture on lower levels cause the AI seem to stop all research and wait for you to do it.
Anyone know if that is true?

Lol, Abgar.

I'm trying my first 20K with a non-scientific civ in C3C.
I've tried them before on vanilla Civ so I know I need lots of wonders in the same city. It's just so much harder now that you can't use MGLs for GWs.

Well, I'll try to finish it tomorrow and tell you how it went :)

Well I was lucky and got two SGLs, one rushed me J.S.Bach (a very useful Wonder indeed when aiming for 20K win), and the other rushed something or other, can't remember what :crazyeye:

And considering the English aren't scientific, I was quite chuffed. I eventually got my 20K victory in 2031, so I still had some time to spare.

This game takes more time than I thought it would...
I'm around 50 turns away from victory, just turned 1700 AD.
I got my 6th MGL in (I think) 1695 and I haven't really been fishing as much as I could. I would prob have finished the game now with the old MGL rules, but that's the challenge of 20K wins in C3C :)

I'm sorry for not updating, but I had some trouble transferring the files from my work PC (w/o floppy or CD-burner). Fortunately, I got a USB flash memory stick for christmas, so now I'm back on track :)
The game ended with a cultural victory in 1820AD.
Here's a few screenshots from the turn before 20K was achieved. This certainly was a fun game and I'll be sure to do a 20K again later. Carths seemed to work very nice and the early Mausolleum was a big help. Let me know if you've got comments or questions.

Edit: cropped images.

I went back and held elections just for the fun of it and it was thoroughly :p indecisive.

You should try to also get the Wonders the AI won't build e.g. The Great Wall, which gives good culture after 1000 years. And The Colossus, The Mausoleum of Artemis, The Hanging Gardens are very nice.
The most helpful wonder in a 20K game is Shakespeares Theater, because it keeps the people happy, provides enough culture and most important, the city can grow past 12 even without Sanitation.

Ah, yes.
The Great Wall was one of the cascade wonders after I got the Lighthouse IIRC. Anyway: the Aztecs got it.

As you can see, I've got The Colossus (first one I built), the Hanging Gardens and Shakespeare's.

I'm guessing you're referring to the Temple of Artemis, which was another cascade, this time from one of the early MA wonders (I think). Tech rate was pretty high early in the game so I couldn't prevent all AI civs from getting wonder techs.
I got the Mausoleum though, although I just noticed I've probably forgotten to post one of the improvement lists. You can still see all the wonders I did get on the top 5 cities list. I'll try to update the picture with a correct one.

What difficulty mode was this? One of the things I've never liked much about the 20k victory is that is seems like it would be impossible on the higher modes like Deity (which I don't play anyway, so I don't know why that bothers me :).

I've gotten a 20K culture on C3C, on Monarch. It was with the Chinese. I built almost all the wonders until the Modern Age in my capital. I got all the Anceint wonders except the Pyramids, and the Temple of Artemis, without a SGL btw. (My capital was a monster, 3 cattle and plenty of bonus grassland and a river) I got all the wonders after then Ancient Age, it was close though. I almost didn't get Sistine Chapel, but had some help from a SGL. I was producing 134 cpt before the game was over.
