First time playing Napoleon, small earth map, king difficulty, standard game speed, I spawned on the NA continent, with plenty of barbarians to keep me company.
Long story short, Japan spawned in asia and by 1400AD had defeated Russia in asia, all but defeated Persia in europe, and taken most of africa, pushing songhai and americans into little corners. Then he started chewing on city states. If I was going to win, I had to take him down soon.
Is Bushido overpowered? I can tell you it was a freakin massacre for about 70 turns, each of my cities on total war cranking out riflemen and cannon flotillas floating across the northern pacific. I lost at least 20 units just getting a beach head on his 2 eastern-most cities.
Then his "real army" came, probably swung back from turning everything west into a parking lot. He had artillery, riflemen and dozens of samurai (which incidentally were near-even odds with my riflemen even when they had 1 health left. damn things wouldn't just die). Then the ai became really stupid, well like it was smart to begin with...
On a small map the siberian peninsula is 3-4 spaces wide north/south, so it started embarking little flotillas of samurai and riflemen everywhere north of manchuria... which my 3 frigates eagerly gobbled up at no risk. How's that for lame. If you can picture what I just said, you can imagine I'm feeling a combination of, "YES!" and "WTH?"
So that's pretty much how I won. 70(ish) turns later I'd won the war of attrition with 4 artillery and 5 foreign legion left and by that time, with the land combat results, I'd taken only a grand total of 6 cities in asia, but his back was broken, his equivalent of SoD's were gone in sunken flotillas all over the yellow sea. Don't get me wrong, there was a hella fight on land, but I really did probably kill 30(ish) embarked units with my frigates.
Oh and I forgot to mention a couple barb caravels chewed on the southern side of my invasion task force before i could get frigates over to stop them at one point in the middle, there. I lost maybe 6 units that way.
So, in summary, yeh, I think Bushido is a little much but it only really shows HOW much when Japan is 1000 points ahead...
...and the ai is stupid. Really bad stupid. Someone needs to fix that.
