One of the primary uses for the Danes is the versatile berserker. With 3 moves instead of 2, he's practically a pseudo-knight who has defensive bonuses and attacks cities with no penalty. The amphibious upgrade is just icing on the cake, but nothing worth writing home about.

So what's the problem - while G&K did make some civs more powerful buy including the musketmen in the warrior path (Ottomans, Spain etc.), they wrecked the danes as now, the Longswordman has an extremely short life-span as the upgrade is just one research ahead.

Unlike japan, who's samurai's bonuses are inherited by the next upgrades, the 3 moves of the berserker are not an upgrade, they are part of the core unit and as such they do not transfer to the next upgrade.

This was no problem in vanilla as the longswordmen upgraded to the Rifleman and had a very long life span, furthermore, the Berserker directy upgraded into the Rifleman, which is, of course another Denmark UU, so the movement speed loss was tolerable as you got the hill/tundra/snow move bonus.

But now, you have a short time frame with the Berserker, and a long time with the musket, which will just have an amphibious promotion, and loses the pillaging aspect too since it's not considered a "melee" unit.

You might say don't upgrade, but the path to Rifles is a long one.

MODS: please move this in the GaK general section, I accidently posted it in strategy..

Yea I would change the Berserker to make the +1 movement a promotion it keeps.

Because at the moment longswords have such a short lifespan in Gods and Kings and without keeping the promotion the UU has become practically useless for the most part.

Agreed.. it wouldn't make them OP I believe, especially considering how Horses have a far superior upgrade path later on, all the way to GDR.

Good points. I'll add to that the movement increase of Knights and Cavalry, which means the Berserkers is no longer as fast as those.
