hello everyone this is my first time ever playing civ 4 i heard good things about so far its alrite i just want to know that during play set out scouts expolers etc.. to explore the land but years goo pass even ages go by and still all of the tile are black and not visible all i can see is the rivers and trees...can anyone help me?????

Welcome to the forums and the game!

The blackness is unexplored areas of the map, the only way to get rid of them is, well, to explore! Send your initial warrior/scout out to get the lay of the land and meet the neighbours. After you explore a tile you see what the tile is, but if it's not within the vision range of a unit you can't see any units on it. Just wait for Kmad to post in this thread and clear it all up in a much better fashion than I can :p

I think I'm making this sound more complicated than it needs to be, just explore, it'll go away :)

Once you explore, you can see the map. If you don't actually have a presence in a particular location, your view will be dark - just means you don't know if any units or barbarians or anything else might be there. Or even new cities founded by your rivals could be there!

i see but ive tried all of that ive tried scouts and expolers i can see rivers and trees but nothe actuall terrain

lad777,
I think you're having trouble seeing what the *underlying* terrain is underneath a tile that is forested. Simply move your cursor with your mouse over an explored forested tile and on the lower-left corner of the screen you will see a written description of that tile (like "Forest/Hills/Grassland"). I agree the underlying terrain beneath a forest can be hard to see at first, but just read those descriptions when you have a cursor over a tile....and....when you finally get bronze working you can cut the forest and see the terrain underneath quite easily! This applies to jungles (removed by Iron Working), too....

I had the same problem when I downloaded the demo. What kind of graphics card are you using? I was using one that was no where near the minimum so I downloaded the Nvidea graphics controller and did some playing around with it and was able to see all the missing graphics. Only problem is that even with the demo my computer was running hot. So eitherr upgrade your graphics card or go back to CivIII.

Hope this helps

If that is true and you are playing the demo, then if you are from Gamespot which suspended me for giving out these other forums there all the time for all the question when I was only trying to help, then it is possible that all of that was fixed in the patches that came out for the game after the demo was probably made.
I know Gamespot has a forum, but really the amount of new people having problems with the hardware of the computer may not actually realize that there are places such as CivFanatics on the Internet. Unfortunately for Gamespot then, the forum for Civ IV is now deleted by me. I just started up a thread to state where to find help like over at CivFanatics and another place, I just forget to mention that it was mainly for the hardware help, although here is the place where all the help and files and Mods and Scenarios and Game of the Month along with Apolyton where new players can see the support Civilization games get in this World.

So much for that then! I delete Gamespot myself.

this is what it looks like threw out the whole game

Patch your game. This is an old bug. In the Civ4 menu, go to Advanced (menu option), then search for updates.

Thats the same problem I had with the demo....The Nvidea graphics control panel fixed it for me

i tried the update and it said there is a patch "1.74" i let it download for 30 mins and it was still at 0 is there any direct site i can download it from

man its still not working is there any chance that the problem can be my video card

I had more or less the same problem. Download the latest drivers for your card, patch your game and set the graphics in-game to medium or low. It helped for me.

Maybe, you can give us your type of graphics card. I'm sure it will help in finding the reason (and solution?).
