De Gaulle (Industrious-Deity Series)

The moment Firaxis starts giving away their games, I'll stop complaining about them. But if they are going to charge us for their games, I think we have the right to say "Hey, I paid for this?"

Well, to defend them a bit further (not that I'm a big fan of Firaxis, mind you, just a huge and old Civ player), I would say that the thing that makes the AI looks silly is the WONDERFUL JOB of all the Civ Fanatics on this site. My game on Civ 4 improved from poor to quite good (well, not Deity yet, but I'm not anymore a monarch looser ;-) due to all the readings I found on this site.

You would be surprised, all you Civ4 gods, to realize that the game is still challenging for most of the players. So don't be too hard on Sid's team. One thing that has allways worked is giving the AI tremendous advantages over human players at high levels. But I think the base game of the AI is not THAT bad. Just imagine the time you spent inventing all those great stategies that now enable you to play at deity.

It's really hard to program a good AI. Firaxis has done some good things on this game : improve it, correct the bugs, make some great improvments without BTS, worked for the silly Mac users (don't answer that ;))...

Yes, AI IS silly, but once more, try to program a better AI, and THEN complain about the Firaxis developers !!!

PS : thanks anyway for the post, Obsolete, I learned a lot of things from your game. I just would have liked to see the details of your techs. Think about it next time.

Obsolete, seeing what your position was a few turns later, don't you think your initial position was good enough, and you were wrong moving to the marble ? Or do you fancy this extra hammer so much that it doesn't matter loosing all the floodplains ?

Thanks for the game comment, but please, don't push too hard on Firaxis skills. If you don't like their AIs, just program them yourself ;) Making an AI capable of handling such a complex game as CIV4 is quite challenging, you know ?

(It's actually an extra 2 :hammers: )

This game (and its predecessor Civ3) has kept me occupied on and off for years now, I'd say that it was well worth my $50 + $30 + $30. Can you not say the same? :D Give Firaxis a break, they made a damn entertaining game.

yeah, thinking a single turn ahead is so difficult to implement... the AI does suck in many ways that are not hard to have been avoided [i tell that as developer, myself].

I don't think making a perfect one turn move AI will enhance the AI game in any way. What is needed is a correct plan maker, and the ability to follow it with places for momentary changes of plan.

Just think of what is involved in making a correct city growth plan (including whipping, drafting...) and imagine you have to implement the coordination of 20 or so cities, with a bunch of opps, barbs...

Once again, if you're a developer, feel free to do better, after all, it's only Python...:lol::lol:

PS : my initial question remains unanswered : do you think moving the initial settler was a good move ? Not that it matters much later. From seeing Obsolete games, I think you can win this game whit kind of ANY start, even what I consider the worst (no offense, just my personal impressions, evidently false after seeing the outcome of his games ;))

I'd rather do it in java (at least it will be way faster, exposing the API in java should be easy)... having enough free time (and dedication) is not something that comes easily when one grows older.

As for the former question: i'd have moved onto the hill as well.

Yes, I liked moving on that hill. If I had to do it over again I'd do it just the same. Besides, the the whole barb BS it was nice to fall back on the extra hills-def for those over-run emergencies.

As for Fixing Firaxis' mistakes, sure I'd do it, if they PAY me. After all, it is THEIR job. THEY are getting paid for it, and have milked this product very well. Sid does well at MILKING the series, and has many, many years experience in doing so.

I'd like to do an IMP or EXP series (I'm actually quite good with both traits), but I'm not there yet...
My first 3 immortal victories actually shared 3 traits, Expansive, Spiritual and Financial (Isabella, Mansa and Pacal) - my 4th was with Roosevelt. I think Expansive is underestimated, though it might be better at higher difficulties since the lower free health. But the cheap granaries alone makes it awesome.
