Hi

I play on emperor and I have a huge problem with maintanance. First game I palyed as Rome, My praetorians conquered greece, egypt, carthage, a bit of arabia(yerushalim and makkah). I have both the islamic and christian shrine. My research is around 10, 20 % and at 100% my economy goes back with 466 gold/turn. Okay, im having a pretty big army, I believe the maintanance for units have been greatly, AH, to get to the point I kind of fell way behind in tech compare to the chinese and europeans which had like ten techs more when I was reaserching divine right. Crap, the question is just, how the hell im I suppose to keep my maintanance at a reasonable level while managing a large empire? It feels like it gets bigger and bigger the whole time.

I played a new game as carthage, emperor, somehow managed to create an equal large empire. This time I manage to have the reaserch around 50%, but somehow im the most underdeveloped technologically wised nation in the world. Khmer, india, china all the european civs even the native indians of south america are like an era ahead of me. I mean, my empire at 15 cities should have quite a huge tech advantage over lets say the french with only 4 cities. I only play on emperor but I feel that the ai has some quite good tech advantages over the human on this level.

In RFC its really hard to get a large empire going especially with some civs, its a bit easier with some but playing on emperor is going to be tough with those as well.

Btw do you have vassals?

yeah! I know its supposed to be a bit harder on emperor but i think its to hard to hang on the tech race. After about 40 turns the chinese ai has researched mathematics which is just COMPLETely impossible for a human to do when playing as them. THen the ai only wants to trade techs if its 10:1 to their profit. Iplayed on monarch once but I found it to easy, but i dont remeber emperor being this hard when i played it on the warlords version.

I think it has to do with all the hidden factors for each civ which makes it harder especially when you run a large empire, try some of the modern civs most likely be easier to keep up with the tech race. I suppose youre not going for the UHV eh? just playing the game.

The fact is that the emperor level is tough, too tough in my opinion. You just can't cope with the other civs in technology. I guess the penalty in technology is doubled between monarch and emperor.

The only victory I achieved at emperor level (not using UHV) is with the Greek : a cultural victory with 3 cities.

I think an intermediate difficulty level would be nice, as monarch level is a bit too easy. I don't know if Rhye could implement that without too much work ?

I agree with you. Emperor is too tough, Monarch is too easy.
