Am I imagining things or when the AI is near death does it conscript like mad and throw everything it has at you?
Is there a way to predict when this will happen?

I usually find the AI does that when you start fighting it. Once you start hurting it, is usually falls apart. All it's cities are revolting, all its units are out of date, all it's citizens are starving.
Once you've killed it's armies (and unless it's fighting on multiple fronts, you'll face it's armies as soon as they can get to you), it'll roll over like a sick puppy

When you`re fighting against well developed AI, yes it conscripts like a mad. But conscripts units are weak and it`s like top of the cake, when you`re finnishing them.

What version are you playing? The AI was more prone to draft itself to death back in Vanilla.

Oh and last night I witnessed the urban legend. I lost and elite MA to a spearman.
He was in a town accross a river, size 3 or 4. I thought my Elite MA could overcome those odds.
