Declaring war

OK here's a dumb Civ question, but I'm actually not sure of the answer.
You know when you declare war, do you then have to wait a turn before
attacking to avoid copping a bad reputation? I haven't noticed the difference
between attacking right away or waiting....but that's probably because they
all hate my guts already anyway.

I was under the impression that you always got a bad rep if you attacked them. In order to avoid damage to your reputation, you must get them to attack you.

Cheers....that makes sense. For some reason I had this idea you had to wait, maybe it was from civ 2 all those years ago.....
