Defeated because time ran out?

I was two turns away from winning a science victory when the clock ran out on the Modern Age! My science was so ridiculously strong that I was forced to research future tech making the age end sooner. The game told I was defeated but who won?

I don't understand why victory conditions can't be turned off anymore. I'm more of a roleplayer in civ, don't care much for points or 'winning'.
