I had an defensive pact with Sweden and Aztec when suddenly England backstab me. But I got no help either from Sweden or Aztec. How does the defense pact actually work?

It works like this
A signs a defensive pact with B
C declares war on A
B automatically declares war on C in defense of A
This can get screwy sometimes if you are already at war. They don't apply if you are already at war and as soon as you go to war they are canceled. So if you were at war previously when you signed it I am not sure if it goes into effect. It SHOULD, but I am not sure.
Best way to use them is to be at peace, sign them, and then wait for the eventual war declaration.

It was peace when i did the pact. I checked my notification log to ensure i had the pact. But when England DoW on me, my Defensive pact was gone (selectable in diplomacy for Sweden & Aztec)

The only thing I can think of bar there being some sort of glitch is maybe they also had Defensive pacts and it canceled? I'm really not sure. Do you have a save?
