Deity - dealing with Ideology hate/public opinion unhappiness

4, it was probably a cultural runaway, I ended up abandoning the game in annoyance.

How many cities do you have may I ask?

If you are -18 you might have too many cities too make Freedom Viable - an ideology unhappiness hits you really hard if you have a lot of cities. The Freedom policies are generally the hardest to get happiness on. You need a lot of buildings that are generally not that easy to get or are plain bad (i.e. watermills, hospitals, medical labs, mints & stock exchanges...).

You also need a lot of specialists to overcome that -18 hit (that would 36 specialists in total I think). I suspect one of the culture runaways probably has Sacred Sites (at this point you are probably better switching ideology), unless you think you can build a lot of happiness buildings quickly. If you haven't built colosseums and zoo's you might have a shot at fixing things - but its going to slow your game down considerably.
You're best bet might be to try and ally some mercentile citysates - you can get +10 happiness from one citystate alliance.

If you rushed Radio and the Eiffel Tower is still available you might be able to grab that with an engineer and pump out great musicians to try and get to 10% tourism over your neighbors...

Hmmm interesting - normally 4 cities is manageable. I suppose you are Tradition, that gives you a tonne of happiness with the capital.
Generally I think the game is salvageable.
Circus Maximus can give you 5
Zoo's can give you 8
Eiffel Tower another 5
A Mercentaile CS 10 - if you can ally one (they have 2 luxuries and 2 happiness from being friends)
Universal Healthcare (usually 7-10...) You have 4 cities so you should have most of the national wonders. For Freedom I probably prefer this policy as it means I don't need to bother building medical labs and hospitals everywhere (more growth for more unhappiness)...
Universal Suffrage (at least 8-10)...

Not sure if you've been able to leverage off religion... but you can get plenty of happiness from that...

Now I thought of something, I've also seen AI go from being influential drop to popular just because they bulbed a writer. I'm not sure if it can delay culture victory. Not sure if culture victory requires all AI be influential simultaneously or it is enough to have influential at some point in the past.

I think it has to be influential simulatenously but I'm not sure if i've taken notice of that%.

The amount of tourism you need to overcome the AI will increase as you get towards 100% Often why you need musicians to push over the line. If the AI gets a golden age or world fair or bulbs a writer then it will certainly drop your tourism over them

Also why if I'm going culture victory, the sistine chapel is a number 1 priority wonder. Sydney Opera House is important. Any culture boosting wonders you want to keep well away from the AI.

There is another way you can reduce ideology pressure on you. If the Reds are knocking on the doors of Old Kent Road, then start playing American rap music on the radio;)

So if you are freedom, hopefully there is another civ that has chosen that ideology. Open your borders to them, send them a trade routes etc.... to help them get influence over you. If they get to Exotic over you, that will cancel out some of the pressure from other ideologies. It's not always achievable but the ideology aspect of the game is interesting because it allows the player to come up with some quite creative ways of handling a situation.

What happens if an Ai with a differing ideology is influential to you, but at the same time you are influential to them?
Do both parties get the unhappiness or does it cancel each other out?
