Delete old saves!

Thunderfall,

Can you let us know how the space situation is going?
I have made it through 10 games I have been in so far.
I still have at least 10 more.

Ha! Over two hours to do this! Just so you know how much I appreciate CF being here for us! And sorry for the problems, as I presume the SG's are the source of file overload, in general.

OK, I've gone through all finished SG's in which I've participated and erased the saved games. All, that is, except for the infamous "Oh My God What Happened to the Zulus???" turn (from RBD1), "Fat Lady Hasn't Sung Yet" (from RBD4), and "Eighteen Techs Pop From the Great Library" (RBD7). There were other watershed turns I considered saving (like "Baltimore Shuffle" and "You Do NOT Threaten the United States" from RBD3) but decided I had to draw a line somewhere, or I'd end up not erasing anything.

I also INTENDED to leave alone all my turns in which I was the last player in the game and got the win/loss, so that the final record for each game might be preserved... only to realize that for all the games I've played, I've not yet once been the "last guy to bat". Somebody else has always seen the last turn! Amazing.

List of Completed SG's for which I've erased my saves:

RBD1
RBD2
LK7
RBD3
RBD4
RBD7
RBD11
Infantry
Utopia

Oh, I also left ALL of the saves for LOTR1 unmolested. That was the first Deity SG not only attempted, but won! Perhaps it should remain undisturbed, for future reference.

List of ongoing games in which I am participating:

RBD5
RBD6
RBD9
RBD10
RBD13
RBD14
RBD16
RBD18
RBD19

Is it all right if I wait until each game finishes before deleting the saves there? Just in case there is some need to refer back, or even (goodness forbid!) to backtrack due to file corruption, etc?

In the mean time... I'll urge all of my comrades to clear up their saves from old, completed games. I'm also not yet clear on all the steps involved in the new file uploads -- but do I understand correctly that file space on YOUR file server is NOT a problem, and that only these old games (with files stored on the forum server) will need this scorched earth "erase the old files" treatment? Or what? Do you prefer if we avoid using the forum attachment feature as much as possible? OK for small, compressed screenies? Or best to be avoided entirely? Guide us! :) We need you to stay in business! :D

Oh, man, what a pain this situation is...

Rather than simply deleting the save files, wouldn't it be better to download them, upload them to the file server via the "easy upload" feature, and then delete them from the SGs? Perhaps you could edit the postings that previously had the attachments to reflect the new locations of the saves.

There are some people who, when reading through the threads, like to download and experiment with the game as it was at the time (particularly when the game is saved immediately prior to a lot of interesting military activity, for instance). Deleting the savegames will remove that possibility, and that's a shame.

It would also be of some use to know how much space is really being freed up by doing this. Just a rough estimate would be sufficient.

That's not a bad idea, but it's even more work than just deleting the attachments. Some games I wouldn't mind doing that (like Rise of Rome, Babylon Uptopia and our (first) German game) Others I don't think are worth it.

I agree! It would also help us decide whether we can leave the screen shot attachments as they are...

Unfortunately there is no easy way for me tell how much space we are saving... I have to get the info from Telefragged. (I don't even know the total size of the forum)

You guys don't need to delete those old attchments in one day. Just delete a few each day...

And if you want to keep some of the saves/screenshots, feel free to upload those files to the file server and link to them, as suggested by kcbrown.

Thanks for everyone's cooperation. :)

I finally caught up with my bills and bought a newer computer. Now I can play Civ3.! Whoohooo!:D :rotfl: [dance] [dance] :jump: :tank:
Now if I can just make sure I don't lose more than a week or two's sleep while I binge with Marla's map! :crazyeye:

I just want to say thanks to the posters that are going through and cleaning up the old SG threads. You have shown that you are a valued part of the community...plus you have saved us Moderators from being commanded by TF to do this! :D Seriously though, thanks for helping to make CFC a great community. Like TF was saying, take you time. This is not something that needs to be finished in a weeks time, but it will help to have this done before the next outage, and we never know when a backup might be required to get the site back up.
