It may have been coincidence that the game slowed down when you saw your first industrial unit. My computer (being rather on the slow side) usually plays along at a reasonable pace for about an hour. Then it slows down for another hour. After more than about 2-3 hours of play it shuts down altogether. I've heard that this may have something to do with the Win 98 swap file eating all my hard drive space, but I really don't know.

The other possibility is that your computer opponents finally reached a critical mass of units and cities to cause your game to slow down.

maybe a big war was triggered - when my games goes slow, it usually meant that someone is kicking the living hell out of someone else.

If you're on larger maps things will start to slow down mid-game. Once you hit the industrial age all those cities are suddenly able to produce a lot more units. Especially if there is some major fighting going on. So there's a lot more for the AI to do and manage.

I've still not played on the biggest-sized maps because i've heard the horror stories of waiting 20mins while the AI has its turn.

Actually I think the slowdown has to do with calculation of trade routes and borders. Right around when you see battleships, airports are being finished. An airport creates a trade route to all other cities with airports.

On a side note, I've taken to playing on huge maps and have next to no slowdown. Part of it is probably the 512 MB of RAM. The other part is probably because I always shoot for a diplomatic victory.
