When you usually want to delete items from the start menu (and the rest of the programs menu) I know you can right click and just click delete. But my laptop (win xp pro) will not allow me to right click and get the option to delete the items I want. Is there some setting I need to do? Or is there some other thing I have to do to clean up my start menu and other expanding menus.

Try right-clicking on the Start button and choose Explore. You then get the start menu in the Explorer interface. Then copy, move, delete & add shortcuts and folders as you wish.

If you have many users on your computer, the short-cut you're looking for could either be under the current user's programs (What you see when you right-click and choose explore or open) or the short-cut could be under the shared start-menu (what you see when you right click and choose open or explore shared start menu). The last option contains all the programs that are shared by all the users and not just your user.

Try dragging the items from the startmenu onto the desktop, then erasing them. Other options are Right Click on the Start button, the select Explore or Open, after which you will navigate the start-menu. You can also enter this manually from the Windows directory-> Start-menu.
