Demanding Tribute...

Hey,

In Civ2, I used to demand tribute from every civ all the time. And get loads of cash. It just occured to me that, I don't do that in Civ3 - and wouldn't know how.

What is the demand tribute equivalent? Renogiate peace? Ask for gold and say 'take this deal or suffer? How do you do it?

Second question: Does anyone employ this?

Thanks/
P

Renogiate peace?

Yes, this works very well in Civ3 if your civ is more powerful than them.

Ask for gold and say 'take this deal or suffer?

This rarely works unless you are super powerful than them.

In any case, I do not demand tribute from the AIs because I want to keep them happy toward me. The most you can get from your demands are a few hundread gold and some usless techs. On the other hand, by keeping them happy, you could get all their gold with a smile. I often let them feel my wealth to improve their attitude toward me (for example, give them 500 gold to hold for a few second, then take it right back before they have a chance to spend it).

Demands do work. I guess that will be my only contribution to the game but I proved that demands do work.

Check this post

The demand part is bolded and reddish.

That being said, I would not recommend over-demanding stuff from a civ.

A few games ago I negotiated peace with the Iroqious for practically everything they had (techs and gold.) The very next turn I demanded two small towns (2 and 3 pop each) and was surprised when they gave them to me. By this time I had beat down the Iro to about 5 cities and the two they gave me were recently conquered from neighboring Egypt.

May I ask what patch version you are using? Because with the Civ3 1.29f patch and PTW 1.21f or later patch, the AI stop giving away their cities during peace time. Also, they no longer sell their size 1 town even if you offer them 1 million gold.

Cities for peace is good when the civ is on another land mass and you want a foothold.

The tough thing is finding a city they're willing to give up.
