Hey, i've had a search around but haven't been able to find the answer.

Does anyone know how many megabytes (or gb's ) the demo will be? Unfortunately my downloads are capped at 20gb a month, and i'm worried this will be a bit too big

Well...my download for the game was 4.45 gb, so the demo should be well within your limits.

yeah but thats a monthly limit ... and we have used most of our limit for this month :(

But i guess the fact that no one has replied with a definitive size means the we don't yet know how big it will be. Thanks for the help :)

Welcome to CivFanatics, Lone Farmer. It's not known how much the download for the demo will be. There are some guesstimates, but really you'll get the true answer tomorrow and then you'll be able to judge for yourself whether you want to download it or not. One night sleep really isn't that bad.

Could it be that the full version without activation will serve as demo? This could be really nice.

Could? Yes. Will? No. The demo will be only a few civs, turn limited (100? like in Civ4), era limited (e.g. ancient and classic or so) and therefore I'd guess around 1.5 - 2 GB in size.

They could have just hardcoded that stuff in the exe; that's how the Final Frontier demo for BtS worked. It had all the BtS assets in it and everything; you were basically downloading a complete copy of civ minus some art and scenarios. I would imagine that most of the unit/leader art is not there but it might be so that people can use the full civilopedia.

It wouldn't make sense to include the full game in the download, it would make the file size unnecessarily large.

I figure it would be a cut-down or rather limited version of the game - it is meant to be a taster to encourage those on the fence to buy.

Less than 4.4 GB :D

Well hopefully you got a bargain: monthly download limits are such a ripoff (5GB is nothing). I'm paying 18 bucks a month for a crappy 1.5 mbps dsl line, but there's no download limit, so all i need is patience :)

Its so big your computer can't handle it. Sorry, but its true.

56k used to be the bee's knees... Just sayin.

At theoretical full blast, 5 GB would take... <calculator> some 11,000 hours. :eek:HOURS:eek:
(That's 462 days, fyi... in a theoretical, best-case download-only scenario... Is my math right?)

I still say my 3 mbps line is way overkill.

My guess is 1gb or there about.
It will prolly be set on 1 locked mapsize / mapscript (maybe even specific map, like mesopotamia), so it'll need all the normal textures and assets.
If there's only 2 other civs, it'll only need 2 leaderheads (the player civ is prolly locked to America or something generic like that and you dont see your own head, no offence to the yankees out there) :)

So yeah, 1-1.5 gb is my guess.

It's a spit in the face of all non-US gamers. I pre downloaded 4GBs of full game and now I need to download 4GBs of demo. Instead of just taking the data from the full game and swapping the executable. Looks like Valve approach is that foreigners don't need convenience.
