AS we are about to produce our first settler, there are two directions that we could go that would allow for an acceptable amount of growth; I propose the following queues:

Granary(9)->Warrior(2)->Settler(5)
or
Warrior(2)->Granary(9)->Settler(5)
or
Warrior(2)->Granary(9)->Warrior(2)
or
Warrior(2)->Warrior(2)->Settler(5)

This discussion will run for a maximum of 2 days, after which, a poll will be posted in order to allow for approx. one day of polling time.

Although I would normally say granary right away, the 2 warriors and settler approach is appealing because we'll need to expand quickly to have a decent shot at better land beyond the parts we can see.

A granary right now would just double the already high growth rate, and get us into happieness problems faster. After we have another city to produce military, then a pure settler factory starts to sound interesting, and a granary will be a must.

I's say a Granary is totally not necessary. In fact, as we have 3 Warriors, excellent growth AND excellent production that we can switch back and forth, we should go:

Settler, Warrior, Settler

EDIT:Just to clarify, I meant that the first Settelr in the queue above would be the one that arrives next turn. With that in mind, I would say the build queue could be:

Settler (in 1), Warrior, Settler, Settler

We would only have to put in a Warrior when our Growth/Production laborer swaps couldn't produce a Settler without watiting more than 2 turns. We need growth, not Military. We've just washed away a thousand years. Let our second city produce Warrios for the Settlers.

I agree that we should wait on the granary. Warrior, warrior, settler sounds best right now.

Warrior(2)->Warrior(2)->Settler(5) would be okay.

Warrior(2)->Warrior(2)->Settler(5)

Works for me :)

Do we even need to poll this? It seems that everyone here agrees this is the best way to go.

I hope I came in in time to put my 2 cents in. I beleve we should have the queue mainly build warriors and settlers at the moment. I beleve that areas that have excelent food productions (Such as a mined cattle or wheat tiles) should have granaries.

You guys just don't like granaries, do you? ;) I say build up the capital to size 4 or 5, build a granary, and you'll have decent production and growth.

We are concerned about happiness. Higher population causes us to have to divert resources to keeping them happy. We don't like that.

Chieftess has it right - at the moment we are dropping our capitol down to 1 every time we build a settler, it then takes us a long time to rebuild our population to get a decent level of production again. with the city at 4-5, a granary and some military police to keep order (maybe even a bit of slider at peak population) we can be churning out settlers, workers and military like there's no tomorrow. We need to expand. We need a granary.

I don't agree with CT or Furiey here. We don't have time to build an uneeded granary. Right now, because the President has adjusted our production/growth by way of Laborer assignment, we are not dropping down to a 1. We will be at a 2 this time. After the next Settler we will be at a 3 or higher. We will eventually go into unhappiness because we are not building Settlers fast enough. A granary is NOT needed. Building Settlers is.

I agree with Cyc here. The granery is unecessary until we want to have a wonder city.

My opinion more or less. Was too lazy to write it though :p

Without a granary and +5 food, the quickest we can replenish our population following the production of a Settler is 8 turns. With a Granary we can get it down to 4, doubling our Settler production. Yes we'll need to deal with the unhappiness – a couple of military police will take us to 4 content, we’ll then need to use the slider, or hook up those luxuries and another city to produce the military units required for escort etc, but being able to pump out Settlers in 4 turns sounds just what we need for expansion. I’m not saying we should scrap our current queue, and it will take time to build a Granary, but we need to look forward more than just the next couple of Settlers and look at maximising our growth potential.

Ever heard the phrase "I didn't have time to sharpen my axe"

We need to consider at what point we pause our slow rate settler production and build a granary to double our future settler production rate.
