Did anyone ever get the Ironworks small wonder?

Till now I never got the Ironworks small wonder, simply because I never got Iron and coal in one city-radius!
am I the only one who has never got this wonder or are there more people, and are there people who did get this small wonder and how often did you get it?!

Yes, I've gotten it before. Not often though. Maybe 10% of my games (rough guesstimate). I have built a city twice in order to get it. One of those times required disbanding an established city.

I've gotten it a number of times, but each time I've had to buld a new city to get it. None of my current cities had both in it's radius, but a properly placed city can often build the iron works. I always take a close look at my territory once I get Oil and Coal to make sure that a new city won't be able to build the Iron Works if I put it down in the right place.

This wonder is so rare that I keep forgetting to look to see if I could in fact build it. I have done it twice. Easiest way for me is to go in the trade advisor screen and hover the cursor over the iron and coal shields to see if any are in the same city. Scanning the map would take too long for me since I have so many cities on a huge map.

I finally got one in my last game. Playing a Huge map of the world, I was babylon and I had just taken a city from france in a peace settlement. I had destroyed her once already and this location was her repop. France had repopped at the tip of south america. I was primarily gobbling up northamerica, starting in maine and vermont and spreading west and south. Anyway, I was building a huge cultural juggernaut in north america, when lo and behold, my little french city assimilated :borg: a zulu city right next to it. Hehe. Cool, I thought. Some time later, my advisor informs me that my people would like to build the ironworks. I am like, No ****! [party] So I start scanning all of my cities and their radiuses, but finding no coal or iron. I am thinking that the domestic advisor is high:smoke: , but then I zoom in on my little colony. I notice that the zulu city has just expanded its borders and now includes some coal. Of course, the bad part is that since it is so far away from my capital and I have already built past my optimum city limit, the town is totally corrupted! Damn. Anyway, many, many turns later, after constructing courthouse and police station to try and reduce the corruption, while maximizing happiness in the town:king: , I finally manage to build the ironworks. [dance] If only I could have had it in one of my production centers.....ah well. At least I can say I have had it now.

From what I've seen, definitely worth building the Iron Works, if you can. In my last game, I razed a city close to iron & coal & settled in the perfect middle spot. City was probably only 6-7 tiles away from my Forbidden Palace. City turned into a 150+ Shield wonder (with Factory & Nuclear Plant later - had Hoover before that) & was caught up improvement-wise in a big hurry. I really liked building improvements from scratch in 1 turn!. Needless to say, an easy space race victory.

However, I've seen that (on standard maps, anyway) there is usually 1 place in the world where building it is possible. Whether or not that spot close to you is another matter.

The first time I got Iron Works randomly in one of the first games
I played, in a city I placed long before coal. Unfortunately, I hadn't started reading this forum so I didn't know what to do with it and never even built it.

The second time I was ready. I saw that my rival China had
the city of Canton with Coal and Iron, so I made it a priority to
take it from him. Once I had it, I rush-built Imperial Palace with
a Leader and gave it every production improvement.
At one point I was mobilized for war and had every production
improvement for a total of something like 225 sheilds/turn :cooool: Pumping out ICBMs like there was no tomorrow (which was true for the other Civs in the game!!)

I have built it and beleave me it's definately worth it I like being able to pump out wonders in just a few turns. And like someone said its and easy space race vic.:crazyeyes

As an aside, I've only checked this once, but the AI built it when it was able to. I'm not sure if it will target some land after coal & iron are visible though. Anyone else see the AI build it or not build it?

Nope... never seen the AI build it, but that don't mean that they haven't.

I've also seen the AI build it. As for myself I've built it twice or thrice. Because I always look for at least two iron there is a fair chance. But we all have our own playing styles, right?

In one deity game I built every single small wonder (except strategic defence which there was no time for) + the medieval sistine chapel. It was very comfortable because I could keep to my own pace, not having to worry when the AI nicked all early wonders. It is in fact the only deity game I've won.

Wouldn't you agree that Wall Street and 1000+ gold per turn is at least as important as iron works?

Playing as good ol' Bismarck, I got the Iron Works when coal mysteriously popped up next to Berlin, giving 130 shields per turn without the manufacturing plant. Aluminum was found in the city radius soon afterwards. Too bad there isn't any bonus for having *three* strategic resources next to one city.

IMHO, the Iron Works' requirments are met too rarely to make it anything more than a toy wonder (although a nice toy if you can get it). I think the requirments should be changed to demand iron within the city radius, and coal within the civ's borders. Making the Iron Works more available would give the civ more choice as to what city will become the industrial powerhouse, instead of having it selected by two freak occurences if at all.

I can see where you're coming from: it is very rare. It would be nice to able to build it wherever, but I think with this Wonder Sid is trying to encapsualate an industrial phenmonen that sometimes -just happens-. They're trying to show that just sometimes, a certain place becomes an industrial powerhouse due to luck and not much else.

An advisor will let you know if it is available. I have built several.

I've never seen it. I've played probably a hundred or more games and haven't even been given the option. I'm way jealous of everyone who's had the opportunity:cry: .

Sorry, have to disagree with you here. I think it was brilliant of them to include a factor which come in to play every few games or so and not every game. Makes playing another game feel different. I wouldn't mind seeing more of these.

Actually, in my last game, there was a second spot in my empire I could build it. How lucky was that? Unfortunately, it's a small wonder & can only be built once :(

Just got Iron Works in New York! :king: :) :) :)
(I get it about every fourth or fifth game.)
