Is there a difference?, beside the fact that humor is socially acceptable and sadism not? Am i sadistic because i'm trying to spoil people's pleasure in humor?

Humour: Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson camping, Sherlock asks about stars in the sky, Watson says something poetic, Holmes notices that their tent's been stolen.

Sadism: Man cuts someone's achilles tendons and laughs maniacally when he cries for help.

See the difference?

Ever noticed when someone really laughs he looks like a maniac?

Humor is trying to make you or someone else laugh.

Sadism is trying to make you laugh by hurting someone else.

It's a bit of a gap between the two.

If you make someone else laugh by depicting a third person as a idiot, then you have both.

humour makes me laugh.

sadism makes me hot.

Humour is laughing at the misadventures of a 12 year old boy.
Sadism is engineering the misadventure of a 12 year old boy and cherishing the most terrible and awkward of moments.

Children - they aren't just a source of protein anymore!

For both me and them. At least to begin with in the latter case. Fresh pageboy?

Just make sure to check the expiration date.

Anyway, cast my lot in the "there's a gap" caucus.

Humor and sadism are not in essence the same thing, though often they can be interchangeable... jokes about bodily functions might not be sadistic (unless you have some helplessly offendable near by) while jokes about the special Olympics probably are...

I think thats the other way round, the military versions of it are always officer making the high minded comment with the NCO spotting the missing canvas...

No,

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson go on a camping trip. After a good dinner, they retire for the night, and go to sleep.
Some hours later, Holmes wakes up and nudges his faithful friend. "Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see."

"I see millions and millions of stars, Holmes" replies Watson.

"And what do you deduce from that?"

Watson ponders for a minute.

"Well, astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful, and that we are a small and insignificant part of the universe. What does it tell you, Holmes?"

Holmes is silent for a moment. "Watson, you idiot!" he says. "Someone has stolen our tent!"

There's an overlap for most people, but they aren't the same for most people either. There's a lot of humor that isn't about enjoying the suffering of others. There's also a lot of suffering of others that most people would not find enjoying.

Seems like a lot of people here are thinking that sadism = heavily watered-down sadism.

I just can't find one example.

What a bizarre life you have led. Watch Oh Brother Where Art Thou? as it has a lot of examples. Heck Ghostbusters does too (and here it is important to note there's a difference between the suffering and the mistakes of others, though the first movie doesn't need that distinction*).

*The Holmes joke on this thread is like that. It isn't funny because Watson is suffering, it is funny because Watson has missed a profoundly obvious fact.

I just can't find one example.

A man is dining in a fancy restaurant and there is a gorgeous redhead sitting at the next table. He has been checking her out since he sat down, but lacks the nerve to talk with her.

Suddenly, she sneezes and her glass eye comes flying out of its socket towards the man. He reflexively reaches out, grabs it out of the air, and hands it back. "Oh my, I am so sorry," the woman says as she pops her eye back in place. "Let me buy your dinner to make it up to you," she says.

They enjoy a wonderful dinner together, and afterwards the theatre followed by drinks. They talk, they laugh, she shares her deepest dreams and he shares his. She listens. After paying for everything, she asks him if he would like to come to her place for a nightcap... and stay for breakfast.

The next morning, she cooks a gourmet meal with all the trimmings. The guy is amazed! Everything had been SO incredible! "You know," he said, "you are the perfect woman. Are you this nice to every guy you meet?"

"No," she replied. "You just happened to catch my eye."

Humor typically doesn't involve actual living people having pain inflicted upon them, by you or someone else.

Sadism does. If you find the act of chopping off snake heads or human heads funny, then you're probably in great need of professional help, and/or you were crappily raised.
