I was merely curious what levels most people are comfortable playing at for casual games. What levels give you a challenge or you have the most fun on? So here is a poll, go ahead and submit, give reasons if you wish.:scan:

I for example, am comfortable with diety, despite that i have to be a peacemaker for more than half the game.

Since I haven't learned all the ins and outs of civ3 yet, I still play on regent since it seems to be (for me anyway :)) a level of play where I'm able to dominate most games but I still hafta stay awake.

I play Regent but have been getting very good at it so I think I may try Monarch very soon.

I'm a Regent-Almost-Monarch player too!

However I'm doing an Emperor SG and not screwing up too badly

I'm kind of between difficulty levels. I play mostly on emperor level and the early game challenge is enough so that i really have to fight and play my cards right to climb the histograph.

However, late game, in the early-mid industrial age, the AI seems much less adept at managing its empire. You often see them building the forbidden palace right next to their capitol and neglecting to build factories/power plants in most of their cities. With a well placed FP and factories/coal plants in each city i'm more than doubling their production and at that point its pretty much gg.

Come to think of it, i've only actually finished two games of civ. The late game turns are too tedious and time consuming, and i usually just retire once i have an overwhelming advantage.

When i bump the difficulty up to Deity, it doesn't feel like civ anymore. I'm just exploiting the game and doing drone work (contacting each civ every turn for techs, trading maps, etc.) While i can do things like infinite city sprawl, or upgrading dozens of chariots to mounted warriors to swing the game in my favor, it gets old quick.

These observations are based on patch 1.21, so hopefully some things have changed with the latest patch. I just recently started playing civ again and am eagerly awaiting my Play the World exp to arrive. Amazon sure is taking their sweet time. :)

I got up to Emperor very quickly and usually play that - the levels below that don't offer much of a challenge IMO. Deity is doable as well, but very difficult in the early game due to the AI production advantages - without a very good starting location AND room to expand you might as well restart - or cheat by reloading on a regular basis..

I just started playing regent. However, I dropped the number of rival civs until I get the hang of it. I'll do a game or 3 like this, then add another rival or two. When I start owning them all all the time, I'll go up another level and drop a civ or two... Lather, rinse, repeat.

ive currently moved up to emperor and am not doing to well, im holding my own till about the mid middle ages, where i fall behind in production and technology.

Technology is alwas my biggest concern as i cant fight a war without it, and when in a war cant really research that fast. So im between levels, monarch/emperor

I love playing regent but monarch is more challenging and i like playing good entertaining games so i voted for monarch even though i would classify myself as a Regent/monarch player.

I like to play emperor. It gives me challenge enough to concentrate during the game to be able to win at preset conditions (tournament) or to try out new things, but is not requiring 'do everything right' of deity games.

I have been playing emperor for a while, finished the last game as the english so i guess i should move on to deity but I have the feeling that it was my last game. The higher level I play, the more it is like work to me. Don't find a lot of enjoyment from following a "winning formula".

Lately I started to win all my games at regent level at around 1800 AD, so I moved up a level and now I'm playing my first Monarch game with the Babylonians. It's a 950 AD and I'm by far the largest, mosta advanced empire and I'm killing of my enemies, so maybe I'll go for emperor next time (or try monarch with a different civ)

Deity. I've been playing on the hardest level for so long it's hard to move down levels (for tourneys etc). Because the gap between deity and emperor is so large, playing on any other level seems like a bit of a cakewalk if you use deity strategies.

I'm playing mostly regent games and they're hard enough for me this far 8^)... Especially with raging barbarians (It's no fun having anything else than raging barbarians because if you don't have it there's never anything to be afraid of if you aren't at war, this little fellows makes defence something to work for)...

I find the smaller maps are easier.
So I might play monarch on a small map, regent on a standard, warlord on a large.
Some CIVs are easier so I would play one level higher with the Iroquoi, Russians, Persians or Romans than other CIVs

Some time ago I was a diety Civ2 player, when I got Civ3 I played 1 game on monarch, then 2 on Emperor. Now I play Diety, otherwise it would just be a matter of deciding how I wanted to win and then dominating the AI. The Diety AI advantage gives them a fighting chance. I want a game that I can lose occasionally.

Its all prefences, Diety is pretty tough for me at the beggening, but i get the hang of it, and by the modern age i start kicking their asses :D

All my games have been emperor level for the last month now. Starting to get the hang of it, but so far only 1 victory and several defeats. Should have another victory by the end of next week :)

I can't imagine ever winning on deity but then I used to think monarch was tough, now I get bored playing monarch games.

I am comfortable with Monarch, so that's how I voted. I have played my last 4 games on Emperor, with 2 wins and 2 losses. The early game in Emperor is very hard for me with a poor starting position. In my wins, I had cattle or wheat and faired much better.

I usually play on Monarch, since that's the only level where you can be a relaxed builder and still feel challenged. Sure, I could move up to Emperor and win with tech-scavenger/ancient warmonger strategies, but I don't have much fun that way.
