I am (Chinese) in the middle of the game, have artillery, millitary tradition etc. Yet i can't seem to negotiate with my neighbors (Zulu and Egyptians) as i want to. For example, if i just entered into peace arrangements with Zulus, how can i ask them for the right of passage? Or How can i form an alliance with them against another Egyptians? Is it even possible if i discovered that Egyptians, and Zulus did not.

Thanks!!

Grasshopper,

Both of the things you seek are in the Foreign Advisor screen. It should be under Diplomatic Agreements. You have to have a peace agreement in effect before you can negotiate other DAs. And it is possible for you to have contact with a civilization that a third civilization does not.

However, you can use that diplomatic contact as a negotiating tool--for instance, offering to sell contact with the Germans to the Russians in exchange for Mapmaking. Might as well get something for it before they get in touch with each other.

But if you play your cards right, you can exploit this middleman role because they will deal technologies to you but not to each other. Once they've contacted each other, they'll just trade directly and you won't make anything.

You must have an embasy with a culture to form diplomatic arangments other than peace/war

You also need certain techs to be able to make certain agreements. Mutual protection pacts are available after ??? (maybe military tradition or nationalism..can't remember)

Nationalism allow you to make ADVANCED Diplomacy (Embargo etc.)

does the civ i am negotiating with has to have "Nationalism" as well in order for me to use "Advanced" negotiations?

Thanks

No. As long as you have it, you can propose the agreement. It works the other way around as well.
