Diplomacy

never heard of it

I've heard of it, but never actually played it. Is the goal to keep World War I from breaking out?

There's also a Diplomacy sub-forum here. ;) :D

No, the goal is actually to take over Europe !! :p It's a board game that looks a bit like "Risk" except that in Diplomacy, there's no dice... which means no random. Everything happens because of human decisions.

You may ask how can it works without dices ? Even in Civilization there's a part of random when the little units are fighting fiercely !

Well it's simple. To let your army unit win a battle, you need support of one or more army units. The largest number always win. If it's the same number, than the attack fails. If I could draw you a picture you could see how simple it is. The support can come from your own forces or from one of your neighbour forces. And that's exactly were is all the diplomacy. :)

The game starts in 1900. You have 7 countries at the beginning, each played by a human player (We can play with less but it's less funnier). Those countries are :
- England
- France
- Germany
- Russia
- Italy
- Austria-Hungary
- Turkey

All countries have 3 armies at the beginning. The number of armies is the same as the number of "cities" (3 to each countries at the beginning). To get more armies, you must get other cities. They could come from "neutral" countries (smaller countries like Norway, Belgium or Serbia), or from your opponents of course. ;)

As at the beginning, each country has the same number of armies, lonely countries can do nothing. However, England can ally with Germany to invade France ! :D

My example may sound not very terrific but this game gets very fast truely machiavellic... The game is mostly about talking with other players, you must make everything to win in your alliance and at the same time you must make believe to your "partner" he'll be the winner of the deal. England can ally with Germany to invade France... but if France's offer to invade Germany is more attractive to England... then maybe England could go after Germany !

Technically, here's how it works :
1st round : Every players talk together in corners of the room or anywhere else. Of course even if conversation are secret you're free to hear what's being said next to you... (everything is allowed in that nasty game).
2nd round : Once you've agreed with your partners about what to do. You must write your order (it's simple : stay, move, attack, or support another attack). Each players write his order secretly thinking about what the others could write.
3rd round : everybody gives their orders and we see what happen on the battlefield.

I loved to play to that game but I've finally stopped to play it because it's truely hard to be as much betrayed. Anyway, that's part of the game !

here's is a quick drawn board I've found over the net :
