I just finished a game where I didn't have any wars. The turn I finished the UN I called for a vote. I won unanimously except for the Zulu who voted for themselvs. It was an easy win. And you thought you needed war to win on Monarch. Has anyone else gotten a 8 to 1 vote for them in the UN?

I still, to this day, have yet to win by diplomacy. The only time I ever came close was a game where I had disabled it as a victory condition!! Had I left it as an option, victory would have been mine!

I've really got to give it a try!

I'm a very naughty boy when I play, so I've never won a UN vote at all. Your victory impresses me. :goodjob:

Then again, I've never let an AI exist long enough to finish construction of the UN before me, so I can proudly say that I've never lost a UN vote either.

I've been able to do that on Chieftain through Regent, but I have yet to get that kind of vote in my favor on Monarch. My last vote was a 2-2 tie, so I had to eliminate one of the civs so I could swing the vote my way, 2-1 :)

In one of last years tourny games I managed a diplomatic victory in a world without war. Not a single battle was fought between the nations of the world. In the end, all of the ladies (Cleo, Liz, Joan, Cathy) and Bismark voted Mao (me) the champion of diplomacy. It was one of the most uneventful games I've ever played.

I went fully agro in the next game to make up for the lack of agression in my diplo win.

I think that the Diplo Victory stinks so hard that I usually build the UN myself, and then refuse to hold the vote even when I'm certain I would win.

In my most recent finished game, I was allied with Korea against China, with all other civs dead. A UN vote would certainly have resulted in Korea voting for me and China for itself, but I refused to hold the vote, planning instead to do a Conquest Victory by finishing off China and then betraying Korea. However, in a fit of distraction, I forgot to raze any Chinese cities, so I triggered Domination instead!

Someday I'm going to switch off Domination just for the pleasure of seeing the entire world within my cultural borders ...

Good win, slothman. I've won Diplomatic on Emperor a few times but I think the vote was always a little closer. Winning an "honest" Diplomatic victory without buying alliances a few turns before the UN is completed is a fairly challenging way to win.

I won a Diplomatic victory (7 or 8 to 1) on Regent, huge continent 80% water, 15 AIs. I was the dominant central power on my continent and I let everyone have ROP the whole game. I never had such friendly neighbors, they LOVED the ROP and left me alone the whole game.

I had just read somewhere that the AI loved ROP and it seemed to work for me. I've always been a "closed society" in previous games. I'll use more ROP now, after I've closed all the gaps in my land.

that is impressive
by the way, has anyone won by diplomatic on a multiplayer game? Is it even possible?

Pfft. I've won without any wars many times and had 8 to 1 vote at least once.*

Of course those were on Warlord. :p

Speaking of warless games, ironically I built my biggest empire ever without any expansionist wars, guess the AI wasn't too expansionistic back then. I also started that game far from any rivers, in really plains-heavy area. I think I have a save from that game somewhere if someone thinks that I'm lying.

* Of course that doesn't prove my skills, but that the RNG has a grudge on me and therefore I don't dare to start any wars. ;)

I won my first diplomatic victory 4 to 1 with 1 abstention today. The Koreans (second in population and land area) declared war on me, and I enlisted the rest of the world to fight them, waited a few turns for the UN vote option to come up again, and then held it. Diplomatic victory wasn't really my goal, but when the Koreans did that I couldn't resist the shortcut to victory. This was on Warlord level (my first game on C3C, I might add; I played on an easy level to get a feel for the expansion pack and my next one will be on Monarch).

BTW, my only other attempt at diplomatic victory ended in a 5 to 2 defeat of me by the ever-popular Gandhi.
