Chahaya Tandiyo was just a simple Indonesian reporter. He worked long hours. He didn't have very many friends; perhaps this was due to his Indonesian descent. The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere had brought wealth to Japan at the cost of the other East Asian states. All except for China, that was. He had learned to ignore the prejudice against him though. He would get up, ride the subway, do pointless work, go back home, and sleep. It was all the same; a boring cycle. Even the Chinese invasion did nothing for him. It was all the same to him, and he felt that nothing would change. But today was his thirtieth birthday.
Maybe I'll get something nice, he thought, one winter afternoon.
It had only been a few days since the unconditional surrender of Japan to China. And now, it was time for the Imperial soldiers to march through Tokyo. The three big cities of Japan, and only one had survived major damage. He had wondered if Osaka and Kyoto would ever be rebuilt. The death, the burning...he had covered that. And now, it was time for them to march into the city. Faint music was heard within the stillness. Kyoto had been evacuated because it had been considered the next target. They had relocated the Japanese to Osaka...and he knew what had happened to them. It was eerily silent for a big city, which is to say that although it was still loud by normal standards, it was nothing compared to Japanese ones.
Field Marshal Huang rode at the head of the column proudly. The Chinese Imperial Cavalry followed him, and behind that, thirty thousand Imperial soldiers. As soon as he saw a lone man walking down the street, he stopped and raised his hand. The entire regiment stopped.
"You there," he said, in slightly accented Japanese, pointing at Tandiyo. "Come."
Tandiyo looked confused. He pointed at himself with his index finger of his right hand. "Me?"
"Yes, you. Hurry up."
He was scared, but this very fear led him to go to the head of the army. He could hear his shoes clacking against the stone ground. It had gone eerily silent.
"What is your name?"
"Chahaya Tandiyo."
"Tandiyo? You're not Japanese, then. Your profession?"
"I'm a reporter."
"Ah." he said. Tandiyo felt a hint of derision. A simple Indonesian in Japan. A reporter. What kind of work was that?
"Well then," Huang said, brightly, "from now on, you are the new Prime Minister of the Japanese Diet."
"What?"
