Hey Guys,

I just purchased the D2D version as it seemed a better deal than Steam's (extra Cive and a free DLC for $50)...but here is the weird kicker...it gives me an activation code to then download it via Steam!?

So even D2D's version is via Steam which seems to imply that only a sucker would pre-order from Steam itself since, for the same price of the basic Steam package, you not only get a better deal but it is coming from the exact same place.

Am I missing something obvious here?

You're not missing anything.

Everyone who plays this game, will have to do so through steam in some manner.

I think most of us agree that it is the better deal, especially with that promo 10$ promo from a few weeks ago.

You aren't missing anything, D2D is just the better way to go. The key from D2D counts as a "retail" one, that's the only difference.

Well I like Steam, so I brought from them instead.

Also I will just pay for the first DLC pack if its worth while.

no, you dont miss anything - even if you buy the game in a retail store you could throw away the DvDs anytime once you've activated the cd key in steam

Okay, hmmm.

So I'm downloading from Steam but who will I need to reply on for updates or is that all on Firaxis themselves?

I recall, back in the day, D2D was slow on the patches (an update would be released to retail purchasers and Steam several days to a week before it hit the D2D folk), but I can only hope that is a distant annoyance.

Firaxis/2k will develop and upload updates to Steam servers (using their developer access), Steam will deploy the update to all the users. For those new to Steam: The process is smooth and straightforward.

It's a Steamworks title, D2D's involvement pretty much ends after you input the key they send you.
