But honestly yeah the Varangian Guard as a next-era unit is such a sweet concept and a great play on the idea of UUs in the era system.
Not just that, this idea opens an asymmetric, strategic design of “suffer this era”, get empowered latter.
A nightmare if you look for “perfect” balance between civs, but a fun, interesting factor for replayability or modulating difficulty.
Only thing, for these type of civs to be a real strategic choice, most of them should be exploration, as this opens the real strategic decision: i did well in antiquity, ¿should I discard relevant bonuses in this era, so I can double down on bonuses afterwards?
