DMan1 - Operation Iron Cross (aka Panzers attack)

Yep, just do what you've said and forget about wonder building...
If we are lucky we will get ToE and Hoover's, but i bet it's a little early to do pre-build for those :)

forgot to put updated roster

Pre turn:

Not much. Whip a library in Bonn. It will grow in two.

IBT: Aztecs are building Leo.

Turn 1:

Bonn: Library-Harbor.

IBT: Aztecs are building Knights Templar.

Turn 2:

Koningsberg: Lib-Marketplace
Nuremburg: Spear-Horse

Turn 3:

Nothing.

China and Aztecs have stopped hating each other for now.

Turn 4:
Sell Ivory to Babs to keep them happy. 9gpt+15gold.
Dont want to risk confrontation yet.
We now net 45 gpt, but no one will sell us engineering.

Turn 5:
Not much.

IBT: Celts want an alliance vs. the Aztecs. No thanks.
They wont give us anything at for it all though. (This might be a wrong one though...)

Turn 6:
Hannover: Harbor-Temple.

Turn 7:

I see that the babs have gunpowder. They have a musket in Uruk...
Our Curragh finds a passage eastwards on the northern coast of Zululand. Hopefully towards
the last Civ.
Whip Library in Brandenburg.

Babs want an alliance vs. the Egyptians. I think that would be nice for us to have
the Babs fighting someone. And the Egyptians are remote. Hmm. We can get a combined deal of
Alliance against Egypt and Engineering for 38gpt and 110 g. Expensive....

Posting now for comments.
Should we buy Engineering? From the Babs? And what about the alliance?

Khhm..... feels expensive... not sure...

Does anyone want to comment on this?

It would probably have been a better move to sell ivory as part of tech. deal....
AIs often can't pay real price for the luxuries but if it is included as a part of tech sale we can often get better overal savings.

The problem I see with that deal is if Babylon breaks the deal, then we will stop giving them the 38gpt. Not sure if that is a reputation hit but at least Babylon will be mad at us which might start a war between us.

Well, thats a good point dl123654. We never know what will happen between the Babs and Egypt. Anyone know if we will take a rep-hit for in such a scenario?

On the other hand i guess we would want them to fight someone, although it doesnt seem like it will lead to a lot of losses for them. Egypt is far, far away.

d-man: Yeah, I tried getting engineering when I renewed the deal for ivory with the babs. That was more expensive than this one.

I guess we say, thanks but no thanks. Will play the last two turns and post when I get back from work. Will be short and sweet. :)

All: Does any of you know where to find out how many beakers there is for the different techs? Also, how much is a beaker in gold?
Would be nice to know when brokering with the AI, regarding pay for it or research it ourselves.

JJ

Found this on another thread:

"To check the value of a tech is easy. If 12 beakers give writing in 23 turns, then the estimated cost is 276 gold."
So with civ-assist that should be easy to figure.

I've been looking for a thread with a list of tech-costs, but can't find it. Blame my slow server. But it should be in the Strategy-forum somewhere.

Or someone said it can be found in the Editor. But basic tech-costs are close enough as JJ described, e.g. 12 beakers x 23 turns = 276 (+/- a few)

If someone can find the thread about tech-costs, please drop off the link here.

Sorry guys, put me on auto skip for now. Work and home life etc are taking over my gaming time, damn it. We are launching a product this year (after working on it for nearly 3 years) so the pressure is mounting.

I'll play the next SGOTM, but probably limit it to that.

Turn 8:

Work out that Engineering is 881 beakers, and Babs offer it for 110+760. Well thats about even, adding the alliance.
I say no.

IBT: Egypt demand 29 gold. I refuse. The declare. They are far away, we should be fine.
Also, Zulu is annoyed at our curragh and tells us to sod off.

Turn 9:

War happiness. Turn lux a notch down.
Establish embassy with Zulu for 41 gold.

Turn 10:

Spot light blue border east of curragh! Spain, America or Sumeria I guess, hope not China.
Will be there in a couple of turns. They are between the Celts, east of Zulu and north of Egypt.
My guess is they will be at tech parity :(

If you're paying gpt for an alliance and they break it, you won't get a rep hit and they won't get angry at it (although you won't have the attitude bonus for an active alliance).

CivAssist has the tech costs, as does TechCalc (both found in utilities forum).

@Tim: Thank you, you are absolutely right with all the comments.

@JJ: Nice progress, but could you please put years next to the turn numbers...That makes it easier to track the game. :)

...and wow, such an interesting map....
It will sure be fun to roll it over with new shiny panzers.

I am scratching my head on the strategy for the next few hundred years.
Any thoughts on what we should do?

Sorry D-man... Will do that :)
Hmm. I will think a little about strategy. The variant certainly makes us unable to gain any significant portion of land now anyway, so I guess trading and resrearch is all there is.... for now.
I was thinking, what kind of military should we be building. Horsemen cant be upgraded without iron, but surely we can get some through a trade.
As for our research path, the variant also helps us out a bit, so no immediate need to go towards MT. Although the babs will probably respect us more if we have it :)
We need culture to get babs to flip, and maybe a middle age wonder(do I hear you say Adam Smith or Johan Seb?)?

JJ

There has been a change, I have been dragged into a family trip (6 hours each way) which I found out about last night. Will be getting back tomorrow.

Therefore I will need a switch/skip, sorry.

Have a fun trip and enjoy your weekend!
Thanks for letting us know.
Here comes updated roster:

Pre-turn -> Swap Berlin to temple, our overall culture must improve and I will sort out other cities later to build stuff like that. But right now we need the markets and quite a few cities are building that.

Otherwise, our cities are in good order, I only swap a few tiles to improve growth.

I wouldn't mind another government and I like Republic, but I'm not willing to pay around 40gpt for it.

30AD - Egypt and Aztecs sign peace. Cleo doesn't want to talk to us yet.

Whip library in Dortmund.

50AD - Dortmund library -> harbor.

Hey, where did those lightblue borders go? They are now yellow, darn those Zulus :lol: Curragh continue and find new borders, let those chinese live for another turn.

70AD - Berlin temple -> horse.
Hamburg library -> temple.
Hannover horse -> court.

We meet China and they are up the same techs as the others, no trade possible.

90AD - India ally with the Babs against Egypt.

Ghandi got 200g for the alliance, I give them Feudalism for 208g and a worker.

110AD - Berlin horse -> horse.
Frankfurt horse -> library.
Heidelberg market -> court.

Egypt won't talk, if they would I could get Republic pretty cheap. I can buy it now, but I need some more gold for the revolt.

130AD - Aztecs sign peace with the Celts, and then Monty starts Sistine.

Stupid Egypt still don't want to talk, I can't wait ahy longer and buy Republic from China for 726g. I buy furs from Aztecs for 15gpt and revolt. No chance of whipping anything without losing too many people.

We draw 7 turns of Anarchy, fix the unhappiness in the cities. We are good, making 6gpt and 115g in the bank.

150AD - Nothing.

Except that NOW Egypts are willing to talk. :gripe: Well, stuff it, I won't pay 40g and losing warhappiness.

170AD - Aztecs and China ally against Egypt.

190AD - Celts starts Sistine and China KT.

210AD - Not much.

230AD - Ditto.

250AD - China completes the Lighthouse and Egypt finish Knights Templar.

We have one turn left on Anarchy, our unit support will be heavy next turn, so we might want to exchange warriors for better units.

The ivory-deal to Babs expire in 3 turns, try to make something out of a renewal.

Finally we left dark ages of despotism and young German republic is founded.

Let's see how the roster looks like:

Gozpel - just played
dmanakho - on deck

smackster - auto-skip (using this sneaky tactic to get back just in time for panzers to roll of factories and have all the fun when all the dirty job is done. :) )
