I built some of those in my cities but have yet to see an enemy ship be bombarded by them. Maybe they do increase city defense vs naval units but there's no way to be sure. The only visible effect, i.e. the bombardment, doesn't work so I wonder if the rest does. And yes I have the patch installed.

Does it work for you?

Nope. It seems that this problem is not fixed even in the patch. I am waitining for the next patch now (I have since stopped building coastal foirtresses)

Actually it's already been said that coastal fortresses work as intended. They will attempt to bombard only when a sea unit moves from an square adjacent to the city to another square adjacent to the city. If the bombardment fails, you will not get any message (to much spam if it did supposedly). Since this situation doesn't come up often, you rarely see the message / hear the bombardment sound effect. Try moving one of your sea units back and forth repeatedly next to a city that has a coastal fortress -- you should get hit.

Bombardment defense is definately upped in the game when you have it in the city.

IMNSHO, its value comes from the additional defense, not for the bombardment.

They do work, I've only seen it happen once, because the bombard value isn't very high, and I tend to go heavy on the navy.
