Not to sound strange, just curious more than anything else, but does any one else out there kind of see themselves as head of their own empire they are building? Do you take it personal when attacked as if someone is attacking your own people?

I know it is only a game, but it seems to me that that is the allure of the game, that you run your own country, truly Locke's divine right of kings, hehe. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Long live the King!!!:sniper: :king:

Hell Yeah!

In my current game I'm playing as India on Marla's World Map.

And the German's declared war on me after I ignored one of their threats. We made peace afew turns after tho... probably because I am much bigger than them :D

So I built up 9 War Elephants - Way more than needed! and I went and destroyed them. I wiped them off the face of the planet.

No-one else has attacked me since ....:goodjob:

Its not that so much to me as it is they have no loyalty to you no matter what. You could have a million troops vs 3 of them. You could have given the gift after gift,But if there is some land that they need to get to they will declare war on you in a skinny mini.It really doesnt help you at all in most situations to do anything to try and befriendly with another civ as they will generally always end up stabbing you in the back. You give and giove, but go to war with another civ and they will sign pacts against you ect.Whats the point of haveing diplomacy at all?

Sadly true :(
Other civs lack of human feeling (like anger, friendship, loyalty and so on). They are much too mechanics.

How many cities did they have? Only two? Cause when i go for someone with 9 knights and he has more then 3 cities, I`ll NEVER kill him, I`ll just lose my Knights for 1 or two towns....+

And Hell, YES! I take things personal! Keeps me up most nights just so th *** language will only be spoken in hell!

Why yes I do, I have even been know to fire off a few nukes :nuke: after the game has been won, for some indiscretion that happened a thousand years earlier.

There are many games in which the other side will have settled some land I was going to settle or just kept smarting off diplomatically, or placing troops near my borders, etc. It is like they are your people and you have to protect. I then have to again remind myself that this is a game. hehe:goodjob:

I agree with you. So my strategy is to get what I need out of my AI "friends" while steadily building up my power. Then if they betray me I stop at nothing until they have been exterminated. I definately take it personal when the AI attacks me and more often than not if I am strong enough I exterminate them.

Even though Civ3 was advertised to concentrate less on war I find that if you don't walk tall and carry a massive stick and are willing to use it you will be savagely ravaged by the AI. The AI has no problems attacking you if it perceives you as weak. Hence my relentless lust to "Wipe them out, all of them."

Absolutely. I love to "get into" the game. Unlike the posters above, I almost always will have a traditional ally or two in a game. When an initial reaction is favorable I'll cultivate the relationship and make sure it stays on good terms. I haven't been backstabbed by an ally for no reason. Yes, I've been backstabbed, but there's always a reason that is fairly evident (usually a critical resource).

My wife has stuck her head into my office with a puzzled look on her face when she hears a shout of "YOU *****! I KNEW I SHOULD HAVE KILLED YOU 500 YEARS AGO" :)

I'm a great ally until you attack me once :)

I do take it personally when someone attacks me only because he feels his military is stronger. If this is the only reason, I get really angry and may wipe them from the face of the planet. However, if I can say that I would have done the same, I am much more forgiving.

I am definately a genocidal maniac in Civ3. If somebody attacks me, I kill every last one of them. Comeplete and utter destruction whenever possible. Hunt down even the tiniest of towns on remote islands; and if it's "too remote", screw it, just burn it. Granted most wars get to a point where it's not worth it to wage war (either it's stalemated, the economics are bad, or the domestic unrest). I'll stop a war because I -have- to stop, but never "Just to be nice and leave them a city or two."

"Please! Please Mr. Steve. The Aztecs humbly recognize the folly of siding with the Persians in your war against them. We remind you that we only sent (and lost) 2 archers against your superiour might. We have but 1 city left, and beg for mercy!"

Give me 300 gold.

"But Mr. Steve. Your relentless war of complete and utter destruction has left our coffers empty. We have only 11 gold remaining!"

I know. Kinda sucks doesn't it?

RAZED!

The Aztec civilization has been destroyed.

Sure, I take it personal. I also feel betrayed when I'm trying to pump out horsemen to protect my people during a war, and a few cities fall into disorder. It's like: "I'm just trying to knock back the Germans for the safety of our country. I'm putting all this effort into it to make sure they are forced to fight a defensive war and this is the love and support you show me. "

Yeah, I'm referring to my latest game. The Germans made an outrageous demand. I didn't want to appease them (because my people have their pride, I mean I was totally willing). I couldn't get another Civ to join me, but the Germans got the small Japanese civ to declare war on me. (I was American). I was able to get the English to declare on the Japanese later.

I captured 2 German cities and destroyed 1, and then got them to declare peace for another city. They are still fairly strong, but more confined to tundra. The war was dragging on and NY and Philly fell into disorder twice. I think I still hold a grudge against those liberal give-peace-a-chancers.

I did the same with the Japanese, but I let them have peace before I cancelled the alliance with the English (it was on the last turn so I thought I was safe). Now everyone on the continent is annoyed with me. The Greeks are there also. I'm starting to feel awfully lonely, and can't let my military numbers slip at all. I need to discover another continent (and more civs) fast.

I'm playing the Americans on a world map with 11 civs. Of course I start in Europe??? with 5 other civs very close by. The Zulus are right below me with a long border, and they outnumber me militarialy. About every 10-15 turns (when i discovered a new tech) they would ask for it for nothing in return. Of course that means only one thing. Either give it or go to war. Well, because I'm not ready for war I give it.

But one thing is for sure. WHEN I GET TO THE POINT OF MILITARY BUILD UP.....THOSE PUNKS WILL BE THE FIRST TO GO. Man, I love this game.

What really frosts my willy is when you have a small, insignificant little civ right next to you who you're just knocking the dog snot out of, and they get every other civ to ally with them before that's even an option in the game. Then it's WW3 out there and I'm in the middle of a pangea map surrounded on all sides. I take it personal when I have to build fortresses at my border to repell groups of 10 warriors at a time. Can't they understand I just want this one little civ, until I get TANKS! :slay:

Well, I wouldn't say I take it personally. However, if some fool attacks my civ, he will be punished. I'm often willing to just sack a few strategic cities and offer peace. They can have peace if they accept my demand for all their gold and a few other cities - otherwise they will get obliterated...

If my 5 elite knights standing outside his pathetic little town (defended by a spearman) aren't enough to persuade my terms, he deserves to get razed!

The Aztecs told me to increase my medication in diplomacy when I asked for a city so I took all thier cities but one, took all thier gold, sold all the improments in thier cities, and gave them back to them, then did again in 50 turns.

My wife says she has never seen me so angry at a game. Especially shouting "F!@#$% Russian! F!@#$% C@#$!!!" at the computer screen. "Look, I just took 5 of Russia's biggest cities, and that b@#$% still wont talk to me". My wife leaves the room.

Yes, I was yelling at those Zulus when they came pouring across the border without provocation. I mean, I might have taken the bulk of America during the previous great genocidal war, but they got four cities. That's more than I normally leave to my allies.

But rather than bask in my generocity, they just waited until my back was turned (I was invading the Greeks) and then attacked, razing every city they took and reducing virtually all of what had belonged to America to ruins. Having been soundly defeated, I loaded my previous saved game (yelling at the treacherous computer all the while) and built up an army in reserve and waited. The Zulus never came! Now I'm pissed at them for something that hasn't actually happened.
