Do ships in cities provide any defense against ground troops?

I've been playing around more lately with using a navy to assist in taking coastal cities.

If you use a boat (e.g. Privateer) to actually take the city and do not move in any ground troops, does the parked boat provide any resistance to the enemy trying to take the city back by land on the next turn?

(This may be a dumb question, but I haven't tried it yet.)

I don't remember off hand but just try it in a game and see if your city strength score increases or decreases when you move the unit out.

I would say yes, because a ranged unit would become very poweful if stacked with a land ranged unit, you get three ranged attacks then, (Ship, City, Archery Unit)

I've tried to remember to look in my current game, and I think the ships don't count towards the city defensive strength like land units do. However, like TheKingofBigOz says, it's a good idea to keep a ranged naval unit in a city if you can to launch an extra volley of cannonballs against your enemies.
