I personally beileve we exist i mean the question makes no sense.

No, the burden of proof is on the party making the positive assertion. Explain to me why the question is absurd.

And, in a similar vein, prove to me that we exist. The key is that it cannot be proven that we exist, therefore the fact that we exist cannot be established beyond doubt.

This is an immensely complicated issue, and it's important to remember that there is evidence that we exist.

if i don't prove that we exist am i going to be considered a fantasizer because i assert that i exist anyway?

there is a competing philosophy that says "nobody exists except me." i don't remember what that one is called ...

It is impossible to conclusivly prove anything beyond any possible doubt. You could be in the matrix, you could be a butterfly dreaming you are an anchovy or whatever.

Descartes reasoned that "I think therefore I am" is logically certain. Generally people these days think this represents a wildly cavalier attitude to certainty and he would have been better off with the more concervative "Something thinks therefore something exists" to cover himself against the aforementioned butterflies and anchovies.

In pratical terms this means very little other than baseless self-indulgent metaphysical drooling. Certainty is impossible, as we keep explaining to creationists and globalwarming-deniers.

I exist. From my senses I extrapolate what kind of thing I am, and note that there appear to be many similar things around me. It seems likely that you are all similar to me. So I am sure you all exist. Have a nice day.

    I think, therefore I am.

Right now, the question "do I exist?" is running around in my head. I feel the thought being thunk. The fact that the question "do I exist?" exists, proves that I'm around to ask it.

For me, it is intelligence rather than life that is the end purpose. The body is a vehicle for the mind, not the other way around.

It's a dream only if all my precious plans would come true.

I think the reality of things is proven to a sufficient degree by the act of not paying one's rent. Unjustified faith is enough for me, though.

How do I know you're not figments of my imagination?

    Sorry.

If I only exist in your imagination, then I still exist.

When Einstein first thought up the formula "E=mc^2", and before he wrote it down anywhere, the idea still existed--in his head.

Additionally, there's this: this figment of your imagination is a conservative and an atheist at the same time; he believes in evolution and yet is skeptical of global warming, opposes laws against flag burning, is undecided on abortion, strongly favors our current operations in Iraq, and just generally is currently thinking a whole lot of things you don't want him to think (I know there's something you disagree with me on, somewhere in that mess I just wrote! :D )

Which proves pretty conclusively that you're not the one at the wheel.....

Besides, from what I remember from reading it in college, Descartes never proved he thought.

That means the whole "I think, therefore I am" proof fails. :D

He never proved it to anybody else.

I know there are thoughts rolling around in my head. I can't prove it to you, but I know they're there. That's enough for me.

IIRC, he wrote that it was "self evident", after previously stating that one could not take anything for granted. So, I'm not sure he proved it to himself, either. :)

Of course, I could be wrong... it's been over two decades since that class.
