I'm always biting my finger nails, but I want to get an idea of % of people that actually do...

PS, if you did bite your finger nails but have now ceased, then vote no.

Never and i can't stand the people that do.

What's the point of biting one's fingernails?

I don't know why I do, but I just do.

Anyone here know of any medical reason behind it?

Nerves? I'm not really a nervous person although I drink loads of coffee.

What's that word, doing something without reason because it's just a habit...?

Yes I'm a biter , I'm trying to stop but it's not easy. The best way i have figured out is to just keep my fingernails really short. Unfortunately I sometimes bite the fleshy parts of my fingers instead.

Yep, I feel your pain. Then they get really sore and stingy! AAAGGHH!

I hate it when that happens, but I still bite them even though I have tried to stop. It is worse when I do stop, I eventually get the urge to bite them and I regret it since I now no longer have nails to use. :aargh:

The worse bit is when you have a bit of nail that is annoying you so you bite that off, but that just makes the rest of the nail worse you to have to even it up.

No. I did when I was small. I stopped when I was around nine years old. My fingernails are very strong and grow very well. I neurotically keep them clean, well-shaped, and shiny. I just broke one yesterday. :( My longest one is 22mm but I'm going to have to trim it today to balance out the broken 11mm one.

The fingernails of my left hand, yes, quite often.

NEVER the ones at my right hand. Playing guitar, I need those long, and having had them long since I was something like 7-8, it's like a second nature to take care of them as much as of the essential parts of my body, like eyes, nose, etc. In fact, no matter how hard I try, when I get those nails close to my mouth, they automatically go back, it's amazing how used you can get to something as small as this. :)

Also, when I break one, I not only can't play properly for a few days, or even around 1 week if I'm unlucky, it all feels strange!! The tips of my fingers are just too used to having that protective thing on top of them.

Playing guitar has had exactly the opposite effect on my left hand - I can never keep my nails more than 1 mm long, and because of the constant and really hard effort I make with them, my tips are so tough that they don't even feel like skin any more, and I can even keep them in boiling water for a few seconds without getting burned (yes, I tested that involuntarily).

Erm. I've been measuring from the very base. If we're measuring from where it splits (underneath) with your finger, remove about 11mm from my numbers.

Well, I think it's better to measure it from where it splits, because people have very different nail shapes and for example my ring nail's length (from the base to where it splits) is alone more than that, while my little finger's is about half of that.

I think even where it splits changes depending on how they're treated. The longer the nail, the further from the base the split will be. The shorter the nail, the closers the split will be to the base. This might be all in my head though.

I don't. Althrough I only recently managed to stop the habit of twisting my hair on a finger.

No, I only bite people.

But I pick my fingernails with other fingernails. Not pretty.

I did up until age 30  , now I just pick at them every now and then.

But my daughter has taken up my habit and took it to another level :( .

Only if I cannot find proper nail cutters

I very occasionally bite my fingernails. I don't do it compulsively, I only do it when a nail is bothering me because it's too long and I don't have a clipper handy.

As such, I don't have the nailbiter's fingers syndrome.

Excellent. I'm approaching 30, there is still hope!
