Do you build fotress or is it necessary?
Do you build it under Monarchy, democracy and Feudalism?
I wanna stop the barbarians or some other peace civ in my country coz they are just annoying!

I will very very rarely built fortresses unless I want to stop up an isthmus and colonise my side completely before turning on the AI cities behind it. However, in one game I played some time ago, I had a large continent to my self (eventually ) but there was a big range of mountains, easily the size of 2 city radii next to one another, and it was a huge breeding ground for barbs. I could have built cities there to get rid of the barbs but they'd have needed food caravans from the very first turn so I just put my best defenders in fortresses around this area and chuckled when the barbs got crushed time and time again. The number of barbs even meant that my upgraded defenders were veteran after a while. :goodjob:

Not usually, but in my last game I did. I built a fortress on the 4 corners of all my cities (or as many corners as I could. I had coastal cities that I couldn't build on all 4 corners) like so:

101
0C0
101 key: 1=fortress
0=no fortress
C=city.
I then posted Marines in all fortresses. This way, Barbs and enemy units and dips can't get near your cities without you knowing. It also gives you the chance to stop barbs pillaging your land as you can kill them before they get the chance. :die!:

I only ever build fortresses for aesthetic purposes, and somewhere to keep the troops so that they don't interfere with the contrasting colours of the irrigation and mining.

They are useful for frontiers. Either for barbarian defense, as mentioned above, or to keep the AI out. Remember, a unit in a fortress still exerts a zone of control. A few well placed fortresses with units can prevent anybody from passing thru a very wide swath of map.

Occasionally I will build fortresses as my troops are advancing into enemy territory, simply because the AI doesn't put the fortresses in the best places. In the era before railroads enter the scene, I like to build a fortress right next to the enemy city that I want to capture and load it with units. That way you are not attacking at 2/3 strength, which can make a big difference on higher levels.

Under Monarchy I like to take a few strategic mountain, and hilltops. Just fortify a unit there then if he comes under attack I'll send another so he can't be bribed. If The attackers are decent that a few might take out my top defender I'll build the fortress. If I ever see a mountain, or hill with a river through it I fortify a unit there. Eventually he'll be attacked along with the others and this takes the heat off of my nowall city defenders on flatland. When going to republic or democracy I fortify those defenders if I haven't yet.
How about those bad@ss AI forts? 90% of them are on flatland, and the other 2> one on a river one on a hill. All empty of course. They seek out your mountain defenders primary, while NEVER fortifying on one themselves. If they finally bribe your lone mountain defender (that they just splatted 20 units on) the first thing they do is move it off lmao.
Anyway, I usually pillage more forts than I build: after taking over some territory. They're ugly and I don't want barbarians landing in them.

Against the AI, I love to build fortresses on those choke points, and then watch the AI spend the next 1000 years sending units at. I will also build a fortress every once in a while on a special being used by an AI city. That really pisses them off, and will usually help empty the city of units as they come out to attack. Makes taking their city that much easier ;)

In MP, I use them alot when moving forces up to take a city. Or to hold key points to mark my borders.

I rarely build fortresses. On occasion, on a mountain choke point or a narrow neck of land as a barrier, but that is it. On the other hand, I must admit, I like to use the A.I.s fortresses as jumping off points to attack His cities.

They're very very useful. I question these peoples skills if they don't think they're useful...

You can build them and station troops there instead of a city. The enemy units can't pass this fort if it is 1 square in proximity.

So using these forts instead of fortifying in cities is key. And it keeps your roads and production in tact.\

The down side is that they can be used against you visa versa.

They could capture a city that you just lost, then move their troops up to that fort.

You'll be fighting for that fort spot instead of that city.

Yes, forts can be very useful in the right situaltions. However, if your panzer groups have overrun the known world, who needs forts!

Yeah but I play a hard level Ace.
A few alpine guys and tanks a fort really help the turns go by easier. And gives you ample time to react.

How many beers you have?

I'd vomit right now if I didn't feel so sick.

Is this English?

OK, I try not to write flaming posts because it ruins threads for everyone who might think there's something good to be seen only to find just insults. Let me translate my last post to make it easy to understand for you then.
You're funny mayhem- I found it humorous, haha, hehe, lol, whatever you understand.
playing on a hard level with your alpine guys- civ2 doesn't have "hard level" it has diety, emperor levels as hard levels. Referring to alpine guys makes me believe you couldn't remember alpine troop.
doubting these posters skills- I've been reading this forum for weeks and am quite sure that some of these people that replied are top notch players whos skills you're questioning.
So to sum it up, in a nutshell, to make a long story short> You sound like a newbie, new player, unexperienced player taking shots at experienced players, making yourself look foolish.
:p <--smiley face

Oh so you took offense to my totally neutral comment?
I see.

It annoys me that the AI builds so many fortresses. It's almost as if they build the around their cities so that their partisans have somewhere to go when I take their cities in the late game. :) I wouldn't mind, but having your stealth fighters lose HP cleaning up pointless partisans is annoying.

It is rather a waste of resources that the A.I. builds so many fortresses arround his cities. But than again, nobody ever accused the A.I. of being intelligent.

Hint: leave your stealth fighters over his forts with the wait command while you are entering/capturing the city. Than you can land them in the city and it will preclude partisans in the fort(s).
