I normally stay in monarchy as I reckon that it is easier to fight early wars in it. Also as a non religious civ you wil get 2 x 5 turns of anarchy if you go monarchy then republic.

So, can anyone tell me if they think the switch is really worthwhile or whether you should wait till democracy.

Typically I stay in monarchy as well until democracy is available, particularly at war.

If I'm a religious civ, though, I'll switch governments often and may jump to republic during peace, even if it's only a few turns, before I learn democracy.

Chose wisely at the beginning, If you forsee war go for Monachy, if you don't go for Republic then if you get Democracy switch to it unless you are in war, then wait for communism. BTW this is for non-religious civ's, with religious civ's I don't care and just switch back and forth:goodjob:

If I'm playing a religious civ, I'll switch to whatever government is best for my current circumstance. With a non-religious civ, I'll go from despot to either Republic or Monarch (Republic preferred) and then to Democracy or Communism as appropriate.

I haven't really seen anything appealing about monarchy compared to despot (that makes it worth the anarchy time). So I'll stay in despot until I am set up to make the switch over to republic.

But that's just my playing style, I don't like early wars, I like to build up my infrastructure then. If someone attacks me, I get allies and let them do most of the work. I don't seem to get any war weariness at all if I'm not losing any units (or losing very few).

Republic is my first goal, trade Alphabet, Writing, Code of Laws, and Philosophy along the way. By 2000B.C., I'm already in the Middle Ages.

Despotism to Republic, then I'll stay there until I've achieved dominance. Then I switch to democracy for the victory party.

Unless I'm religious, of course, then I'll switch from Monarchy to Democracy depending on the state of war.

Irrigation for faster population growth and greater shield production. Not that I use monarchy that much.

Switching to Republic requires great care to fully realize the benefits.

What I mean is you must properly build up your infrastructure before making the switch out of whatever govt. to Republic. You must have marketplaces in all your profitable cities and road every gold generating tile possible. Get libraries in place in every good science producing city as well. Once you make the switch with these items in place you'll really see an increase in your income.

In my games I sometimes stay in despotism until I'm ready for Republic. If I'm playing a religious Civ then switch to monarchy fast and then when you're ready to republic.

Waging war under republic is far easier than in democracy too.

I rarely switch from Mon->Rep. It's definitely a situational thing. But here's reasons why I've switched from Monarchy to Republic before.

- In the mid-Industrial age, while not at war, when I want to start doing some research myself but there's a little too much war in the world to try democracy. Also, I'd need marketplaces, libraries, & luxuries in place before switching to make the Anarchy worth it.

- I have a small military as result of a not very successful war under Monarchy but have a decent infrastructure.

- I'm switching back to Republic after going to Monarchy to wage a long war.

Edit: just thought of one more.

- I've conquered enough territory in Monarchy & have taken a huge lead in the game. I didn't want to stay in Monarchy to let the others beat me in tech. On the other hand, I didn't want to go to Democracy so that some distant civ could ruin my lead with a drawn-out war. Hence, Republic.

I'm usually expanding in the early middle age, so I almost never switch from Monarchy to Republic. It's not worthy of the time.

Monarchy is defnitely better than despot. There are -1 penalty in Despot for square producing 3 or more food, shield, or commerce.
