Do you change the name of the leader or civilization when you play?

I know some people might choose their own name or a fictional character, but when you play, do you change the name of the leader and civilization to suit your own style?

For instance I usually change Harun al- Rashid of Arabia to Saladin, or change Wu Zetian to Qin Shi Huang. I also sometimes change Rome to Italy.

Either for historical purposes or fictional purposes; do you change the civilization's default settings?

Give some nice examples!

I do sometimes, most of the time I can't be bothered but sometimes I do some pretty dorky stuff (I played as an Orc empire)

The only time I've done it was renaming America to "The Best" and making the leader name "Mitt Romney"

Yeah I dunno I'm a democrat so I suppose I just find that funny by default. I also make it a point to destroy any civ that chooses anything other than Liberty when I do that.

When Brave New World comes out, you get to blow up anyone without your ideology anyway!

As for the OP, I think I've changed the default name once or twice. During multiplayer with a friend where we set up everything to be World War II nations, I changed Bismark into Hitler.

I did something similar to that where I didn't change the leader name but I once chose maya and for tribe name I put Salvador instead.
Lol

When I first started playing civ I always did that. For some reason now I never do that to the point where it ruins the immersion for me

No idea why that is and why that changed

In previous civ games, I always added Roman numerals to help differentiate my games in my personal HoF. (second game with Monty would be Montezuma II, and so on). Finding I can't do this with civ5 as finishing a game with leader names anything other than default causes a bug in which my personal HoF loses a bunch of entries and a label "have not yet competed any games" is superimposed over my.. ahem.. completed games

Well, I sometimes rename Darius I to Raksas III, Persia to Rindandra, and Persepolis to Veyndra. Just names I made up. Or I rename Darius I to Cyrus. I've renamed England to the British Empire. But I don't really rename often.

It'd be cool to rename Greece like, the Hellenic League to represent that it is a collection of city-states rather than a centralized empire, though I guess since Alexander is in power that wouldn't be true...but I am rambling now!

I almost alwas did in Civ III, rarely did in Civ IV, and never do in Civ V.

I did with Rome, renaming it to Italy with Mussolini as leader. Then I named all the cities Italian names and spelling (Roma, Napoli, Milano...)

I always rename Theodora, it is a completely ridiculous choice of leader (which she was not). But only when I myself play the Byzantines - I kinda like her as an opponent...

I do enjoy playing England as the Australian Empire for some reason.

Not often, no. Though sometimes (very rare) I do change the name so I can screw Around. So far I've had:
The somalian empire, lead by sharif sheik ahmed (Polynesia)
The Wadyian democratic peoples republic, lead by president minister Aladeen (Arabia)
The united tropican islands, lead by el presidente the humble (USA)
The Empire of nepal, lead by Prithvi Narayan Shah (etheopia)
And The glorious Nigerian kingdom, lead by me (Inca)

I used to go on archipelago maps and pretend I was Indonesia using them

The united tropican islands, lead by el presidente the humble (USA)

:goodjob:

Nepal deserves a civ for sure. People seem to know so little about them though so they don't get much love in the polls. Tends to happen I guess when you're sandwiched in between China and India.

They would be the perfect mountain civ cause we don't have one of those yet

I just have fun with city names, like "X Mesa" for Uluru or TGM, and some other stuff.

I absolutely agree. Nepal would make a perfect mountain/ religious civ, and I would love to wipe the smug smile off those stupid caroleen/ Foreign legions faces with THE ALMIGHTY GURKHA! I have been advocating these guys for nearly a year now, in fact I can say I was actually disappointed when they announced carthage, as there mountain ability pretty much assured that Nepal would not be in the game (it would thematicly be much better for nepal, minus the great general bit). They really should have been in by now, and make much more sense as a religious side than some of the choices they have.
