I don't know if there's been a thread about this yet, but I'm interested in gauging what people's opinions are about the designs of the civilization symbols in this game. So I've started a thread and put up a poll with it.

What do you guys think?

I like them overall. I reserve the right to change my opinion if Carthage's symbol is Aleph again. :p

Moving away from the bull for Spain deserves my vote alone really

Like all of them but, as I've said at least a few times, the Maya

I mostly like them, with two main caveats:
  • Greece certainly has better options than an Omega.
  • The Modern symbols are nice individually, but there are three eagles and two of them have the same pose. At least one of them should probably have gotten a different symbol, even if it's one that was historically less important.

People really like their eagles. Half the civs in the game could have eagle symbols. Another quarter could have bears, bulls, or dragons.
Yes, a lot of eagles. In the countries of eastern and southern Europe, the emblems usually featured an eagle. In heraldic terms, it was the aquilar zone, and the eagle symbolized the imperial majesty of both the West and the East.

For Prussia, they should have just gone with the Iron Cross again considering the design is basically the German Empire, and was Prussian in origin anyways.

And lions.

They're okay. I just don't like ditching the longstanding tradition of civilizations having associated colors, which have been part of the civ icons since as long as there have been civ icons.

Yes. I recognize it's better to attach color to the leader, but I do hope we get jerseys sooner rather than later.

There's actually a huge UI problem because of this that I realized while watching the stream yesterday.

I can look at a city on the map and immediately tell what leader it belongs to thanks to their colors. But what Civ are they playing? What units do they have access to? How are they trying to win the game? I don't know.

Say that you don't recognize a city name and thus can't match it to a civilization. You must first realize what leader owns that city, and then reference their banner. This is taking your eyes away from the play area and then back again.

Having the Civ banners beside the city names is a sensible UI improvement that would cut out the middle man entirely, solving this self-induced problem.

(Ideally, each city should have the Leader's face beside it too!)

Too many eagles, and then they add a Phoenix too. And that's not even addressing complications that might be introduced by more birds: Poland, Zimbabwe, Ashanti, Anishinaabe. (We are gonna get a few too many lions as well between the Qajar, Ethiopia, possibly England).

All I'm saying is there had better be a scenario based on The Birds.

Otherwise, the icons are pretty good.

Great Britain will probably get the crown like England has in the past games. The lion was already used for the Normans.
