I don't know about this unfairness by the AI. When the AI eliminates me, it doesn't keep playing for hours and gloating and renaming my former cities, it just steps aside so I can try again.
And thank goodness I don't have to scurry around as a respawn after getting whipped one time already!
I do leave respawn on, and bear in mind that a really early respawn will be more powerful than the lucky-snuffed civ. Thus I won't take out a civ too soon if given the chance.
I play with it off but if it was on it wouldnt really matter. I am a slow conquerer and play on huge maps. Unless a civ is real close by the time I get around to conquering my first civ the map is usually filled up with cities.
What I miss from Civ2 is the Civil wars that spawn a new Civ from an existing Civ. Like if China had extreme unhappiness, Civil war may occur and maybe a couple cities would seperate to form a new Civ maybe called Japan. I might turn on re-spawn if they incorporated this feature.
I play with the option on only if I play on a scenario where I have a tiny map with all the civs on, because half get eliminated in the first few turns.
I like to play with that option off, in fact, I always have. After reading Sean's post, however, I probably should give the respawn a try, just for kicks.
I play with it off...
I dread the memory of the time (very early in my career as Ruler Of Worlds) I killed the greeks and then had to send my brand-new knights on a 30-turn trip to their new location... When they got back home I upgraded them to Cavalry. ><
