I have a question for everyone. If you start a game and realize that you're stuck on some puny little island.. or if you're right up in the icecaps... or maybe just surounded by desert or mountains... do you start the game over?

I always do. Sometimes I restart 4-5 time before I get a map I'm happy with. Some people say "you should play with what you get"

I say "to hell with that. I play civ for FUN and it's a hell of a lot more fun when I win"

I simply can't dedicate the hours and hours required for a game if it means I'm way behind right off that bat.

Hmm I don't really know - I usually play scenarios all the time right now - when I play then it is either for fun or to break some kind of record! If it is a record game then I restart that's for sure, but in a fun game, well sometimes I like to get a little resistance so I don't really mind having a hard time in the beginning. It gives the AI a small advantage, at least that's what I hope, but the never use it for anything good.....

I'll only restart if i'm surrounded by mountains, other than that i just play. Colonize, it gives a new aspect to the game, because alot of the times you don't have to move to another land by boat alot at the beginning so i enjoy every now and then to have to go and colonize some far unknown land at the beginning....

Well, it must be close to the Armageddon. Lord, you know that I won’t fly by that lesson you taught me, to pull out my Wesson you brought me, and i’m not stressin’ it softly. Get ‘em up off me, ‘cause all we wanted harmony, been bombin’ ‘em. Yell up outta my ghetto, “I won’t settle,” get on my level.

NO! That is like surrendering. If I am stuck on a small island then I just think wow what a chalenge. If I conquer the world whit this start then I am rely good.

True starting on a small island is a challenge but i have to admit that i prefer the SMAC approach which will give you a transport ship at the beginning if the islands is very small.

I am a world_mp person...so no retries 4 better map. I like the historicity of the world map and it does remain a challenge. I find the custom worlds ugly and I haven't had as much fun with them. SMAC allowed for custom worlds as their was no history, and a new world could have ANY possible configuration...but civilisation IS EARTH.

Call to Power...no world map SUXXORS! yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk game.

Still civing after 10 years.

I guess restarting just depends on why you're playing. If you simply want to win and get a big score, then restarting makes sense. Personally, I want a challenge -- the most exciting game is one where there's a good chance I'll lose. Where's the victory if you're almost certain to win? If you start out in a lousy place on the map, then it's thrilling to see if you can get into a better position and catch up with the AIs in time to make a difference.

Newbie question, what is SMAC?

Sid Meir's Alpha Centauri. It's like Civ only in space. Don't feel stupid... When i first got here (civfanatics) I couldn't figure it out either.. One day it just came to me. LOL

i never restart. i prefer a s*it start, actually.

and if you think about the island thing for a sec, if you have to have a large navy to colonise/explore, then by the time you start warring, you should have a HUGE navy. with that, you don't have to defend as much, cause no-one can touch you anyway, and you can bombard cities, instead of wasting units, which can then be used to take interior cities.

i love small islands. i'm playing a game right now from a small island, and i have 5 islands now, and i'm killing the germans who are on a huge continent (the only one)

NO I never restart why would you restart we can't restart in real life!
so why should we restart in civ!

**** Cool Books I started my first cool book because I would be Original, and now all you basterd's stole my Idea! thanks to the Insane spamming poster!

Well all right, it's fun to win, but I don't restart. I would feel like a cheater if I did. You have to start out with what you get. I mean, you can't restart real life when you got bad grades in an exam (or something like it)

I always restart if I land between nothing but mountains, hills and ocean. Desert, forest and small islands are NO problem.

I think its better to play when you get a bad hand at the begining
It is a lot funner to win when you are not sure if you were gonna win or even survive at the begining!
why play a game that you are 100% sure your gonna win? thats no fun!

I NEVER restart. This is a shame. TOO EASY

easy to chase the AI from a continent in the beggining and once u r alone and with many cities (your + the AI's) on a continent it's TOO EASY to win.
It's far more interesting to start on an island or a remote place (ex: Australia or India in the Pacific map) so that you can conduct a major well organised attack later in the game.

I very, very rarely restart a map. On occasion I have done so, either because I simply didn't feel "up to" colonizing a horsehockey landscape or such. But generally I just stick with it and try to grow and become strong despite bad lands, after all, taking a look at history in all it's splendor, not all great civilisations had overly impressive lands to boot...

I'm with Kitten on this one, I like the World.mp. But when the occasion occurs that I do play a random map and get stuck on and island, as long as it has good terrain, I don't restart. I've played alot of WarCraft and having a backup base on an island can be invaluble if things don't turn out your way. Plus when your stuck on an island early your tech advances are pretty direct. Plus the computer loves to trade whatever technology they have for map making.

I used to restart if i landed in a crappy starting point, but I came to the realization that a restart just isn't the same as kickin the a.i. a$$ from the original crappy spot.
