Do you want to be ignorant and blissful?

Given the chance, would you give up your ability to reason and rationalize to be ignorant and truly blissful?

For example, if you are atheist, would you rather believe in God and an afterlife? Or are you ok with accepting the fact your existence, consciousness, and being will disappear from the universe in just a few short years?

In your responses, please write about something that people are blissfully ignorant about and whether or not you would like to be one of them.

Forgetting the faith issue, I would not want to be ignorant because the things around me could very well greatly harm me. From things like basic nature to current events, things from outside my bubble can affect my life and possibly end it. Therefore, I would like to retain my consciousness to the environment around me.

Some days I would be tempted to trade places w/ one of my cats. But alas, it is not possible. Besides, if I was them, who would take care of me.

One can only truly be ignorant & blissful if someone else takes care of all your needs.

Why not? If you are TRUELY ignorant, life, would be, bliss ;)

If you live....

I know, I'm always the pessimist!

Never. I'd choose full knowledge of all, even if it meant collapsing under its weight.

Snails are truly ignorant. They don't seem to be overly happy, though.

It's ignorant to think you need to be ignorant to be blissful or will become miserable due to knowledge. So how blissful are all of you then?

And I take some offense to the idea that "non-atheists" are more ignorant than atheists. Where did you pull that from?

It's just a clear example about how someone's life could be more blissful if they choose to accept (their perceived) ignorance. Religious folks can think Atheists are ignorant but I doubt any of them would think an Atheist's life would be better than a religious one.

But further knowledge can equally overcome problems/misery. There's more to happiness than knowledge. In fact, it's a rather small part of the equation, imo. By all means, the more knowledgeable I've become, the happier I have become, and it's not because I'm using said knowledge for any material gain (hah!).

So your argument is, if I'm reading it correctly, that because people perceive knowledge to be their problem, they might wish to be ignorant to be happy?

Yes, certain knowledge does lead to unhappy realizations. Although this thread is more about the adage "ignorance is bliss" and specific experience you've had where you might have wished you remained ignorant rather than take on the burden of knowledge (as I mentioned in my original post).

This is a personal thread and not a general philosophical debate.

I know that's a common cultural myth but I don't see why it would be true. The more ignorant you are, the more you are at the whim of the external world for your happiness.

Let's say you are 60 years old and you've been happily married for 30+ years. But your wife cheated on you once when you two were still dating, and assuming this knowledge would really negatively affect your marriage, would you rather remain ignorant or would you want to know this?
