Since domination victory has been achieved with every civ in regular RFC, I thought that the next step is get them with every civ in Dawn of Civilization.

So the challenge is simple: achieve domination victory with any civ in DoC. Earliest victories are listed together with the highest scores, so every civ can have two records. Of course they can be from the same game. The version doesn't matter as long as it is stable i.e. all civs can collapse and so on. Changing civs to get a better starting situation is not allowed.

The challenge is specific for normal speed and Monarch difficulty. Screenshots for victory and score are required. The starting scenario doesn't matter, although it is a required info and will be listed on the boards.

Also note that games played with DoC 1.11 or SVN </=541 are currently listed separately than the records after the stability change. However, they are shown on the same leaderboards (wins are combined).

To get this challenge going, I give you Portuguese domination victory:

I founded Mellilla with my second settler and conquered Spain soon after I had gotten some siege weapons. I guess the independents got the conquerors with Arabic caravels, but they weren't needed anyways. I colonized Brazilia and the rest of South America quickly and vassalised Aztecs and Incas. Later I conquered China with Cantao as a beachhead and North America from New Orleans that I had founded early. I capitulated France and vassalised India and Mali. China respawned once, but they were quickly annihilated. Economy was the key to superioty as usually.

The later spawn doesn't hinder the Dutch in any way. I sailed straight to America to crab the conquerors and conquered HRE quickly. Then I colonized South Africa and took the out Indonesia via the Trading Company. Meanwhile I beelined for Steam Engine and the incredible Dikes. I also founded the triangle of wealth in North America and took out America soon after they spawned. I got Paris (and St Petersburg) from a congress (French capital was Marseilles) and crushed the French soon after. I vassalised Aztecs, Incas, Thais, Japan and Portugal. To get the land I conquered Italy and the Balkans near to the end.

Leoreth...incidentally, if you should happen to read this thread, I have to ask.

The tech penalty that China has after Renaissance era is over...does that apply over Industrial, Modern & Future?

Because I'm attempting Domination with China, and I'm having an incredibly difficult time keeping up in tech. 2 of my 4 vassals (England & Turkey) have Infantry and won't trade ANY techs to me. Not even Biology. Even after destroying America, HRE & Portugal, the remaining Euro powers (France & Spain) are making roughly (3) or so turns of progress on their research every turn and it's impossible to keep up. Normally, I would depend on Espionage, but I'm so crippled, I can't even get Communism for the spy buildings I need.

If my above above statement is true, please reduce the tech penalty time to just Industrial. China nowadays, as a good example, is not having very much trouble catching up. And if you keep it to just Industrial, it'll challenge the people who just play for UHV while not hindering Space/Dom/Conquest.

I'll edit this post more later.

I personally have never won a domination victory so don't take my words too seriously... But maybe you should build up your economy and tech ahead and start to expand only after you are already in a lead. The European civs have slowed down quite a bit in tech in the recent revisions, as to the degree that when the Dutch spawn, they are leading in tech. So you can blockade the Europeans with privateers (early) to secure land in the Americas. Cities built there would be pretty great (after Steam Power and Biology) and probably won't drag down your economy too much. The privateers would also ensure that England does not tech too quickly. (You should also be careful of the Dutch because of their relatively advanced tech and UU. Once they expand, they could tech crazy.)

Oops, double post.

Edit: The extremely rapid tech rate is due to Free Market civic and AI modifiers, blockading and not opening border can deal with the the former pretty well. Porcelain Tower will give you enough trades when your cities in the Americas have grown big, so you should close your border to potential enemies.

Yes, it extends after the Industrial era. I'm surprised that this causes so many problems because I'm often seeing advanced China in the late game, but I'm not too familiar with their situation.

It's true China has been nerfed quite a bit (for the human player), but for the AI China is quite OK. (I've seen AI China finish the Great Wall on turn 7x, without stone!)

Alright, I'm uploading a save now.

If this turns out to be a lost cause, then I'll probably revert back to an older save.

But I'd like for you all to investigate and see if you can win it.

Leoreth, if you keep only the Industrial tech penalty, it'll work as intended for players aiming for the UHV,
while it won't hinder those of us trying to aim for Space/Dom/Conquest. (Space I imagine for China is completely unwinnable)

I have a gamesave here (1 turn before UHV), I think it's possible to win space race with it.

I haven't got to industrial age yet, so I don't know how hard the tech penalty is, really.

Yes I know, but I was aiming for the UHV. I'm just saying it might be possible to win a space race also with a similar play. But since I haven't entered industrial age I don't know how affirmative I can be.

I can't open your save. Runtime error or something.

It's not SVN.

It's 1.81

I'm on a new computer so I need to redo all the SVN stuff.

The point of the release though, was to test it after all ;)

I have tried to play a little bit into industrial age as China, and I should say the nerf on tech rate is not crippling, one can still tech in a very decent rate.

Hmmm...My economy score is really good, but I can't bring my tech up whatsoever.

See, I think a transition into Capitalist/Republican civics should alleviate my problems
but I'm in no position to take the stability hit you see.

Oh in my game my current economy stability is only around 30~40, and my overall stability is ~-5, not really good. But I must say Westminster Palace + Capitalism is really really powerful, and China has a lot of tiles to cottage (even more in NA) too. I think choosing the right civics early on is really important, otherwise you'll lose a lot of potential.

Edit: then again, I'm not aiming for domination victory, so it's a little different.

I agree with Fresnol in that Privateers ensure Chinese Tech lead. China should fast tech Astronomy - Military Science, and its Coastal cities should be pumping Privateers after Observatory, instead of building Research.

The reason Europeans tech so fast is because they all enjoy massive Foreign Trade. Privateers prevent that, as well as starve their Coastal cities (which is like, 90% of their cities) to death.

The way you use Privateers is you need to select a few good "Parking Spots", that blockade the maximum number of Cities/Tiles possible. For example, a spot in the middle of the North Sea blocks 2~3 English cities, 2 Viking cities, 1 German city, 1 Dutch city, and possibly a French city. This will let you blockade a maximum number of cities with a minimal number of Privateers.

Also make sure your "Parking Spots" are Coast instead of Ocean for the 10% Defense bonus. Usually, 3 Parking Spots are enough to blockade the entire Western Europe.

After selecting your Parking Spots, send out your Privateers in groups of 3, 4, or 5 (the later the era, the larger the group). Park each group at the same Parking Spot. This ensures their survivability through strength of numbers. Promote one Privateer out of each group along the Medic line. Promote others along the Combat Line. When you see weak Foreign naval units (pre-Astronomy units) and Fishing Boats attack/pillage with your strongest and healthiest Privateers. If faced with local numerical superiority (e.g. 4 Tiremes) send out the entire Parking Spot Fleet simultaneously, attack with only one of them and defend with the others. Bring injured Privateers back to Parking Spot and heal with the Medic. The Medic should be set to constant Blockade.

Ignore the Dutch East Indiamen. If you are parked on Coast tiles they'll ignore you too. If you have Combat III Privateers you can slaughter Galleons with ease, which practically ensures that all Europeans except the Dutch will have practically no Colonies to speak of (until Military Science, by which time you will have settled all the best cities in America at your leisure). You can even attack the mighty East Indiamen should you find them injured/isolated.

Also note that Naval units cannot heal when they Blockade (without March, of course). That's why you have a dedicated Medic/Blockader.

This way, you can ensure that your navy will dominate until the Europeans reach Military Science, which will be so late due to their starvation and lack of trade that you'll have teched to Combustion and beyond. As soon as one major European navy has Frigates, group all your Privateers together and march them back to the motherland to upgrade to Destroyers. You get an extremely battle-hardened modern navy this way.

This is also the best and easiest way to get Great Generals without declaring war.

Also, Leoreth, would you please include Privateers in the English Ship Number UHV? With possibly a slightly higher number requirement (say, 30)? England is another civ who would have a lot of fun with this strategy.
